The Sun 22nd April 2021

Post by Radon86 »

Hi All,
I realise that in the past 2 years, there was little to image on the sun. Now the sun is coming to life, I have managed (with advice from you all) to improve my technique and imaging.

Today, I was trying to adjust my ZWO tilt adjuster to reduce or eliminate Newton Rings, but after over 1 hour, I gave up. I then used Firecapture to capture data, and was making progress (with flat field calibration), I was starting to do a full disc with over 10-15 images (I have not counted yet), and the last few panes was affected by tree branches blocking the sun !!
Anyway, I think there is more cloud coming up, so maybe there is plenty of time to do solar later in the year.

I did a quick process of one of the images (there are total 100 GB from 2 days imaging).
I think NRs are mostly removed but still affect my resolution and detail. NR are removed with ImageJ. I am now waiting for a GSO focuser and ASI174mm all the way from USA. Maybe the 1.40 USD exchange rate will work in my favour despite the postal fee of 50 USD.
I may get the Daystar eliminator if I get NRs with the ASI174 camera.

That's an excellent pair of images Magnus - showing so much detail.

Well done and thanks for sharing

Looks good, Magnus.

I'm unfamiliar with the ASI120. In my case, the sweet spot on the tilting adapter (with an ASI174) is the most minor of tilts (just a small nudge of its non-tilted position), which removes the NR's completely. So once you get the ASI174, it should be fairly easy to solve.

Lovely Magnus.
I suffer from NRs and abandoned my tilt adapter. I found it too fiddly especially when the NRs only
seemed to appear when I pushed the processing. I had reasonable success with plastic bag flats and more so
with allowing drift ( if possible ). If all else fails I use the FFT solution in ImageJ/Fiji but that is not always easy.
NRs are a big pain.
Best wishes,
David

Fantastic activity on just a small area of the disc, what a shot!! :bow :hamster: Newton's rings are the biggest pain in Halpha :(
