2021-04-25 - AR2818_2820 triband

Post by JochenM »

Came back from some Sunday family time to a still beautiful sunny sky. According to the forecast, conditions could be fairly decent for some imaging. So I quickly set up before the sun would dip too low.

Decided to focus on the most prominent feature on the disk right now (AR2818 and 2820). Started the session with some CaK; switched to WL after and HA last. By the time I got to the HA; the sun was quite low in the sky already and it shows in the images (which is to be expected). But overall, nice session to end a sunny weekend with.

Setup:

CaK: 150mm achromat @ 120mm f15, Lunt CaK b1800, Baader Blue CCD, ASI290.
WL: 150mm achromat @ 120mm f25, Baader Herschel Wedge, Baader Solar Continuum, ASI290.
HA: 150mm achromat @ 120mm f42, Quark Chromosphere, Baader 35nm H-Alpha, ASI174.

Thanks for looking!

Thanks for sharing!

I really like your WL.

Can you please explain a bit the "150mm achromat @ 120mm f25" for your WL?

1) Does this mean that you masked your 150mm at 120 mm?

2) And f25 means that you used some barlow or FFC after the Baader wedge?

3) Can you please describe or show any extensions/barlows and their positions?

Once more congratulations for your WL!

Best wishes,
Alexandros

Thanks guys.

Alexandros, it's pretty much exactly like that. I mask the scope (an 150 f8) down to 120mm, making it f10. Add a 1.5 and 2.5 barlow respectively and that's that. The reasoning is multifaceted:

- Catering to the local seeing conditions here.
- Significantly reducing the scope's spherical aberration (for CaK mainly). Or well, working around it I suppose.
- Those specific focal ratio's work quite well (in this setup) for the filters being used as well as sampling for the camera.

I don't have any pictures available, but it's very straightforward:

Masked scope -> diagonal with filters -> barlow -> camera.

Thanks a lot Jochen!

You give me lots of hope that with my Lunt130MT that I am waiting to arrive and the Baader wedge, I may have similar results! :-)

Fabulous images Jochen and show so well what is happening in this particular-region.

In fact overnight, there are now three AR's in this fiasco as AR2821 has been added to 2820 & 2818...
Not seen that for a very long-time...

Regards
Terry

All of these are nice Jochen but the white light is the most impressive. The individual granules are easily seen in your WL images. I certainly hope to get this kind of resolution in my images sometime. The biggest solar capable scope I have is a 102mm and I rarely have good enough seeing to use it optimumly.

Thanks for looking and commenting everyone; I appreciate it.

You'll get there, James! The 102mm should be plenty to resolve some nice detail. Seeing is however the big struggling point indeed. Over here it's extremely variable; going from absolutely brilliant and quite capable of shooting fairly high res down to situations where imaging a full disk with a small aperture is already a challenge for acceptable results.

I tend to keep a close eye on the weather forecasts (and predicted seeing values for a rough idea) and try to pick my sessions accordingly whenever possible.

Thanks Mark/Franco.

Probably my best WL image to date. Book worthy might be pushing it a bit, but appreciate it :D
