24 April: H alpha images at higher magnification.

Post by p_zetner »

Hello Everyone.

Here are a few higher magnification images taken in H-alpha with my C8 Edge system (C8 Edge, Aries ERF, ~4.6x telecentric, Daystar 0.6A QPE, ~0.75x FR, Pt.Grey Grasshopper IMX174 cmos ). The Astrospheric app predicted a period of "excellent" seeing and actual conditions were consistent (intermittently) with the prediction but deteriorated a bit faster than forecast.

There are images of AR12816 and images of the field around AR12818 which included the very active emerging flux region S6831. Today (25Apr), S6831 has evolved into AR12820 and the entire region has become an extended active zone while AR12816 continues to decay.

Images are presented for effective focal lengths of ~ 9200mm (no FR) and ~ 7000mm (with FR). The seeing could support imaging at the shorter focal length but the high magnification results are a little soft. Typically, I stacked 25 frames out of 2000 to get reasonable sharpness (at the expense of some image noise).

Thanks for looking.
Peter

Brilliant images Peter: I can imagine how challenging must be to shoot at those focal lengths. What is the 4.6x telecentric you are using ?

Yes Peter, you certainly have shown some excellent images and those frames are just right too.

Thanks vm

Thank you all for the kind comments.

I've re-processed some of the images in inverted form. I actually like this view better than the direct, non-inverted images. There always seems to be the illusion of more detail.

Franco: The telecentric is a home designed / built optic. Let me know if you'd like more details.

Cheers.
Peter

Peter:
Beautiful results working at those long focal lengths, specially when one does not have a superb seeing.
Best wishes.
Eric.

A fine set of hi-res captures, Peter. Inverted images do bring out details overlooked. Nicely done.

Phil has just mentioned something that is very important about inverted/negative images.
