4-27-21 Observations. Lunt 8x32 SUNoculars.

Post by DeepSolar64 »

Today I have been really busy. I had to go get groceries and also to get my second Pfizer COVID-19 shot and do an errand for my Stepson Brian so I had no time to setup the telescopes today. So my small, quickly usable 8x32 Lunt SUNoculars came to the rescue. I observed around 10:45am and the temperature was 69F. Skies are clear. Of course the binos are white light filtered.

With the tiny Lunt solar binoculars I can see all five of the largest spots in the AR12818-20-21 complex located now in the SW quadrant. All arrayed in a misshapen W shape oriented east-west. I could not pick up any faculae in the binos.

Blessings:
James

Good to read your report James and glad you got your second jab, mine second is a month today... I want to get myself a pair of solar binoculars, probably not the lunts, i'll get some filters for my 10x42s, these quick grab and go views are nice, very much more so no we have sunspots to look at again...

Hi James, glad you had a view of the complex of spots.

Keep-up the good work...

A 10x pair would give better views that is for sure but the greater weight and higher magnification might make them a bit harder to hand hold and get a steady view. Image stabilization would certainly help. The Lunt SUNoculars are a bit more modest at 8x and smaller in aperture at 32mm and are quite light but are well made. But equipping an existing set of binos may indeed be cheaper to do.

Binoculars with good white light filters can be a viable and affordable way to view the sun for anyone who hasn't a lot of money to spend and a good quick-grab option when time is little to be had.

James

I have a 20x80 pair that want to get a decent tripod for, that with some filters would be fun too. Have thought about 'modding' these so they only pass green light for better contrast...
