Sun FD 20210423 - ASI120mm Quark ED70 18 panes

Post by Radon86 »

Hi everyone,
I took multiple solar panels on 22 and 23rd April 2021 for a Full Disc from 18 panes of the Sun. Each pane was a single frame only from the video files. I just wanted to know if I could merge them and get a reasonable FD. Well I am reasonably pleased I got this far. I can make it better.
I had to erase the Firecapture Frame and Time data on the Pano as I forgot to cancel this on my original recordings.
Newton Rings appeared in multiple arrays and I had to overcome some gradients using PS and an artifical flat frame. Stitching was done using .jpg with Autostitch. It stiched in less than 1 minute.
Hopefully I will get better.
My ASI174 has arrived now. I am almost ready for straight through imaging on my ED70 and 90mm refractor, but I may need a better mount as things are getting heavier.

I have the full resolution versions on Dropbox if you are interested. I am sure with proper stacking and AS!3 processing of my video files the image could be better.

Camera: ASI120mm
Telescope: ED70 stopped down to 60mm
Quark Chromosphere
Image acquisition and flat frames using Firecapture
18 panes at 10.10 UT to 10.30 UT

SER Player for file extraction from 18 .SER files
Autostitch for FD merging
PS for gradient removal. ImageJ for Newton rings removal.
IMPPG and PS for finishing.
No attempt to highlight proms at this time.

Thanks for looking.

Magnus

Thanks Eric.

I will try working on each pane with a stacked image with Autostakkert.

Wow!! that is a really lovely full disc, beautifully done. 18 panes too :bow :hamster: keeping the seeing similar is the hardest part of stitching as you only need one with bad seeing and you get a fuzzy patch. I've very impressed, I need to work on my gradients a bit better after seeing this :)

Thank you Alexandra for your compliment.
I tried for 2 years to get a full disc, so I am almost there, just have to process each .SER file, and get the proms out, then combine, remove gradients and Newton rings, then more deconvolution, sharpening, high pass filters, unsharp or smart sharpenening, shadows, highlights, contrast, levels ....

Maybe things would get easier now that I have the ASI 174mm camera.

The gradient removal of the full disc pano was done by an application of the artificial flat frame. I can post the details if you need.
I am also looking at Moon Panorama Maker which was published on CloudyNights for detailed moon panorama. I am thinking of modifying or applying it for solar imaging.

Magnus.

Hi,
I don't know if its translatable to solar imaging, but Moon panorama maker is something I could try on the Moon when I upgrade my mount.

Here is a link, maybe you have come across this already?

Excellent full disk, and I echo the comments by Alexandra about the seamless transitions between frames. Well done :bow

Thanks for the brilliant comments everyone.
At last, some good solar activity. I realise for most of the past 2 years, there is not much to image. I will be working on the ASI174mm soon, and a straight through imaging rig, maybe a remote motor focuser and remote imaging via Windows desktop remote, control of mount using EQMod, and maybe the Evostar 90mm refractor will be employed; waiting for a bigger mount though for that.
I still have to process all the images in AS!3 properly and stack them... Looks like May and June may be more cloudy, and less prospects for solar imaging unfortunately, here in cloudy London!

Magnus.
