May 7 2021 Observations. New NE AR.
Session time is 12:08pm until 12:52pm EDT local time ( US ). Seeing is fair under partly cloudy skies. Windy. 55F.
Coronado SolarMax II 60 DS. 16x, 21.5x and 33x ( Ha )
I can see two active region plages on the disc. The first is a bipolar plage in the SE that has a long thin filament to it's northeast. The second plage is emerging from the NE limb and is also easy to see.
I see filaments in the NW and SW ( connected to prominences ) and some smaller more difficult ones in the NE and NW. I also see a small difficult filament in the far SE near the limb.
I can see most of the prominences shown on the GONG Cerro Tololo image. All four " corners " have them. The most spectacular are those on the SE limb. One of these shows a nice pointed shape with a vertically elongated hollow or void within it.
The spicule mottling is easy to see across the disc today.
Orion 70mm Solar Telescope 25x, 50x, 62.5x and 100x ( WL )
I can see the new active region emerging just inside the NE limb well today! Within it's visible faculae I can see 4 spots. The largest one shows an elongated umbra surrounded by a well developed penumbra. It looks a bit bowl shaped ( Wilson effect ). Three smaller spots are south of the big one. Two not so difficult ones with a tiny pore in the middle that I can only pick up during moments of better seeing at 100x.
No other systems visible on the solar disc. Granulation is visible.
Happy Friday!!
James

Thank you James for the excellent report and images.
The new AR is certainly welcome, which is not the case for today's clouds, which just prevented me from doing anything...

Thanks for the report James, I'm glad you could visually see the Wilson effect, that must be quite a large spot then
I'm looking forward to some more images from you terrible weather here

Re: May 7 2021 Observations. New NE AR.
AR2822 as expected is shoving out CME's as spaceweather.com reports as of the 7th May :-
THE SUN HIT EARTH WITH A RADIO BURST: New sunspot AR2822 appeared today and promptly exploded, producing one of the strongest flares of young Solar Cycle 25. The M3.9-class explosion hurled a bright CME into space and hit Earth with a shortwave radio burst. Listen to the static and find out what comes next @ Spaceweather.com.
Can hear the radio-sound of this attack..

I am overdue to image and to use the SMII90. I have been so busy lately that quick grab and go has been the norm.

Re: May 7 2021 Observations. New NE AR.
Lately it really gets in the way. I feel rushed. I like taking my time. It makes for more accurate observations and less hurried time recording them. And since I am new, imaging is even more time intensive for me. I envy those that are retired .marktownley wrote: ↑Sun May 09, 2021 6:54 am Thanks for the report James, I know the feeling of life being busy and getting in the way of solar!
