The Sun today May 09 2021
AR2822 is rotating into view. My very first close up of a sun spot.
Hope you guys like it! Edit: Another version with better sharpening technique

It's interesting to see a lot of astrophotography fellows in western counytries are Generations Xs and babyboomers, many of them are retirees. The age trend seems to be even more pronouced in solar.
It's completely opposite here in VN. 100% are millennias and Gen Z. The landscape is similiar in East Asia countries like China and Korea. I wonder why.

Re: The Sun today May 09 2021
Thanks Minh.
It may well be correct about many of us being of the older-age group, but I am fairly sure there are others, much younger too.
I suppose it would be actually interesting to be able to ask what ages SolarChatters are, but that would/should not happen.
In any case I suspect that maybe out of 1000, only 1 answer would be received, or only one accurate answer...??
Obviously retirees would likely be able to be around during the day and able to grab images when the weather allows, whilst the others are on their work commitments, but being retired does-not mean we are all at leisure, as I for one know that I am busier now than when I was working or flying...
Those poor soles who have to do all the travelling etc. - just to earn for their families/self and country!! And yet still find the time to do any form of astronomy, are really our Hero's...
I'd love to be able to travel and taste the environment around E.Asia, but alas that is not possible for me.
Best Wishes and CLEAR SKIES

Thanks Ivan,
I came from doing DSO for the last 2 years and just got arround to doing solar very recently.
I am experimenting with some other sharpening technique and the result is promising.

In the US solar equipment outside of white light is rather expensive and I think retirees or those close to it have had time to save up money and become financially stable to afford the equipment. And it seems so many youth, Millennials and especially Generation Zers are so interested in trivial things like raves and TikTok. I think in time women observers may see growth here. Girls are surpassing boys now seriously in education and learning and I hope it bleeds over into amateur astronomy. I believe the future largely belongs to women. Young men wanna play too much while young women seem to be taking education and intellectual activities more seriously. Still men outnumber women in amateur astronomy considerably here. In Europe girls seem to be taking the hobby more in stride. 50 years from now I could see older women dominating solar astronomy instead of us older men. So Alexandra and Ella you have a head start and both of you are among the best of us!
May the best age and best gender win.

Interesting thoughts, James.
As here in VN and other East Asia countries, astrophotography is on the rise recent years with China being the forerunner. A lot of equipment makers are now in China making things more affordable for us all. And the main reason I think astrophotography being attractive to us youngers here in China (and VietNam) is that the education of recent years more emphasized on STEM and it provides a foundation for understanding of the space and celestial objects. A lot of older generation here in VN and China does not have this kind of knowledge so they have a hardtime understand the basic terms so it's less appealing to them. I think the education level of China and Vietnam now is much like US in the 70s and 80s.
Female astrophotographer here in VN is still a minority. But many of them are top performers.

Re: The Sun today May 09 2021
China and Taiwan has really made it more affordable for us all concerning astronomical equipment. Synta owns Celestron/Sky-Watcher and also makes the majority of the scopes for Orion and then there is Sunny who owns Meade Instruments who is based in China. There are others. SharpStar and Astro-Tech are two nice apochromat brands that are Chinese made and while they might not quite be to the quality/performance of a Tak, TEC or AP APO it's a law of diminishing returns. Those reference standard refractors can cost 4 times as much and are certainly not 4 times as good. And I would bet the ZWO cameras are Chinese made!
I have always preferred US, European or Japanese made equipment but I must admit the Chinese have made astronomy much more affordable for the majority of us so my hat is off to them. And while their quality was hit and miss 20 years ago they are much better today.
