May 13 2021 Observations.

Post by DeepSolar64 »

Session time is 10:30am until 1:05pm EDT local time ( US ). Partly cloudy. The seeing is intermittent. Rough at times then clearing like fine glass! The temperature is 57F at sessions end.

Coronado SolarMax II 90 DS. 32x, 44.5x and 88.9x ( Ha )
I can see 4 disturbed regions on the disc. The largest is AR12822 in the north-central part of the solar disc. It's ragged plage is easily seen as is it's largest spot and others at higher power. I can see a couple of thin filaments SE of the spot. In moments of really nice seeing I can see the spicules spread out around the active region. I notice no flaring activity. Well to it's south I see AR12823. I see a nice thin looping filament below it's plage and spot. The two other areas are just mere disturbances in the SE and SW. I see almost no other filaments on the disc. Certainly nothing of any size.

In single stack I can see all the prominences shown on the GONG Big Bear and CerroTololo Ha images. The best one is on the SW limb and shows nice detail looking all like a burning flame.

The mottles look really nice today and hint at fine detail during moments of nice seeing. I can also easily see the spicule layer with the taller spicules poking up above the canopy like emergent trees out of a dense forest.

Celestron NexStar 102GT w/Altair wedge and 540nm filter. 55x, 110x and 200x! ( WL )
White light was certainly the star of the show today. The resolution in the 102mm refractor during times of good seeing was among the best I have seen in white light to date. I actually could slightly out resolve the SDOHMIc 4K image! I can see every spot and pore shown in the SDO image in AR12822. The umbra has a very ragged, lumpy rough edge. The Penumbra circles the umbra except for being absent on the NE side of the spot. I can easily see the outward radiating pattern in the penumbra! An arc of spots/pores lie east-southeast of the main spot with some stragglers below the main group.

The single large spot of AR12823 looks almost artificial! It's large and very dark and at a size which usually sports a penumbra but lacks one. And I can see three very tiny granule-sized pores to it's SE!

The granulation is NOT just fine rice grain motting today. At high power, 200x I can see them individually. They " magically " appear sharp and detailed one moment with the seeing and blur the next. But when they are clear I can see each one, all so very numerous. Some are also a bit darker than others. Only a handful of times have I ever seen the granulation like this. If I had a large refractor or a Celestron/AiryLab HaT and lived in an area with really nice seeing Ha would have serious competition with white light observing! Can a HaT system be used in white light? One probably cannot use a wedge though :-(

I did image today. I'll put those up when I process them. I hope they turn out. My visual skills far exceed my imaging skills.

Carpe Lumen!

James

James, your reports are like an exciting book, I want more and more. You have a talent for writing, when you described granulation, it seemed to me that I saw it too.

Your shots are great. I recently tried shooting WL and failed. Realizing how difficult it is and looking at yours, the only thing I can say is wow.

many thanks James for another excellent and interesting report.

The SDO captures do show the current action well, compared to mine today which would have only showed showers of rain and no doubt got the scope and observatory very wet too - if the roof were opened.

Cheers
Terry

Thank you Ivan. I do try to type clearly and it's nice to hear that I have succeeded. I am preparing to post my imaging part of today's session on a different post. I hope you like them.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts and input. Much appreciated.

James
