May 17 2021 Observations.

Post by DeepSolar64 »

Session time is 10:00am until 11:30am ( 14:00 to 15:30 UTC ) Local Time ( US ). The skies are overcast with high thin clouds giving the sky a whitish-blue appearance. The seeing is below average. The temperature is 66F.

Coronado SolarMax II 90 DS. 32x, 44.4x and 66.5x ( Ha )
I can see 4 plages on the solar disc. AR12822 is in the NW and it shows a couple of thin filaments and it's spot. AR12823 is seen in the SW. In the SE approaching the Central Longitudinal Meridian I see another active area. It has three visible associated filaments. The 4th area is just a mere ruffling of the chromosphere in the SE.

The only filaments I see outside of ones associated with active regions are two in the SE north of a prominence on the limb.

I can see all of the prominences shown on the GONG Cerro Tololo image. Later in the session the clouds had thickened a bit and I could only observe them in single stack. I can see 4 bright proms at the beginning of the session. Two in the SW with one having a pronounced dark area in the lower center. The SE shows a single bright but small prom and the NW shows a bright one which resembles a loop. This prom is embedded in a field of fainter ever changing prominences. One small bright one appeared, leaned south and then quickly faded out, all within five minutes! A few minutes later while observing in white light I noticed a new spot just south of that location so maybe it was a small eruptive or surge prom?

The mottles are visible, even through the high thin cloud deck.

Celestron NexStar 102GT w/ Altair wedge and 540nm filter. 55x ( WL )
I can see a single spot in the NW located in AR12822. It has both umbra and penumbra. I can see the faculae to AR12822 as well. In the NE I see a new spot on the limb. It looks a bit larger than the one in AR12822. Even seen at an extremely oblique angle I can see it's umbra lies within a penumbra. It's just barely inside the limb! I can see no faculae with it. To it's south I can see a faint patch of faculae that corresponds to a disturbed area shown there in Ha. I can also faintly see the faculae associated with AR12823. I could have never gotten these with the Orion70. They would have been too dim and low of contrast. The wedge makes all the difference here, it's contrast is better and the brightness can be adjusted to offset the dimming caused by the clouds.

The fine granulation is visible but not well.

Carpe Diem!

James

Thanks James for your report. The proms were interesting today and that lovely loop. I did see a filaprome in the South West. Thanks for sharing.

Great on the filaprom! Clouds might have hampered me from seeing that.

An excellent report James and you've shown the new AR in the NE with what appears to be a very active region and the spot looks big from the extreme-angle view.
Let's hope it give some interesting action over the next 10-days or so as probably AR2824.

Weather here today, just gone through very-heavy rain-shows with more to come, so May is now proving the wettest month - for ages... (April was the driest and coldest too)..

No imaging today, but have achieved some new processing techniques - will be shown here soon.

Best Wishes
terry

I hope the big spot and it's active region proves productive, short of a Carrington-Class flare. Good luck on the weather, Terry, and your new processing techniques.

James
