First attemps H-alpha 18 & 19-5-2021

Post by H-Alpha »

Dear all,

Mastering the rented HEQ5 for LUNT130MT was not obvious, so yesterday I succeeded just one capture of 40 sec before the seeing deteriorated. The sun was drifting a lot on my screen, so I kept 10 sec of the video (twice) that could be handled by autostakkert.

During capture SSM showed min/avg/max 1.3/2.4/3.4, so I masked @ 110mm. Here follow the first results. Captures were processed following the excellent youtube tutorials of Marty (separate photo of disk and Prom) and Martin_S (single photo) or kind of mixing them.

Today the seeing was similar, but HEQ5 was cooperating more... The best capture follows.

I am quite happy for this start (apart a problem on the frontal lens that I will post separately). I may have exagerated the sharpening or the process in general. All commnets (especially those that will help improvement) are very welcome!

And just a question: Why nobody is using the "true" deep red colours that we see in the scope with H-alpha? just because other options are more beutiful or show easier the details?

All the best,
Alexandros

A fantastic start, Alexandros.

Colour is a matter of taste. Post in whatever colour you think is appropriate. Sometimes we do post Ha images in a deep red, but you're right, most of the time the images, when coloured, are orange. It seems to be the 'norm', but for no technical reason. I'm a fan of the red Sun, but rarely publish in that colour.

Dear Jeff, James, Stuart, Franco, Mark,

Thank you all for your kind words and encouraging comments!
Stuart, I am glad you are also fan of the Red H-alpha Sun! ;-) I was so amazed when I first saw this colour last week...
I may try to colour some photos this way next time.

All the best,
Alexandros

Thanks a lot Maurits! Glad you liked it.
I just followed the tutorials of Marty and Martin S. It is really kind of people who share their knowledge and help the first steps of newbies like me.

All the best,
Alexandros
