May 23 2021 Observations. Visual and Imaging.

Post by DeepSolar64 »

Session time is 10:28am until 12:32pm EDT ( 14:40 to 16:32 UTC ) local time ( US ). The skies are mostly clear with good seeing early on degrading to only fair by session's end. The temperature at sessions end is 80F.

Coronado SolarMax II 90 DS. 32x, 44.5x, 64x and 133x ( Ha )
The most obvious thing on the solar disc by far is the active region of AR12824. It's plage is fairly bright with many turns and bends. It's largest spot and two others are easily seen. I can also see a couple of filaments in the system. A ping from my phone was heard earlier sometime after 7:00am alerting me to an M-Class flare. The sun was too low for me to get to it even if I would have gotten up to try.

A second smaller active region is seen just inside the eastern limb.

Filaments are sparse on the disc. Three are seen NE of AR12824 and a few more are seen in the SW. Nothing significant.

The 90 can see all the prominences shown on the GONG images today. All four " Corners " have them. None of them are overly spectacular but all are pretty.

The mottles are clearly seen and the spicule layer on the limb is easily viewed on the limb early on at high power.

Celestron NexStar 102GT w/Altair wedge and 540nm filter. 55x and 110x ( WL )
AR12824 looks really nice at 540nm. I can see structure in the penumbra including the radiating pattern. The umbra looks more tattered than yesterday. I can see at least a dozen spots/pores in the system all hovering around the " mother " spot like a hen and her chicks. I also see three tiny spots in the new system to the east. It sports a double facula! I also see some low contrast faculae in the SW.

The granulation is well seen at 110x. I can pick out individuals with a close look.

I did image today with a couple of firsts. I managed to pick out the ring of Ellerman Bombs around the big spot in one of my Ha images and the continuum image was on the verge of getting individual granules. I could see the granules better visually but the Ellerman bombs missed my eye entirely!

Fabulous images James, is the close up spot one of yours too :bow :hamster: and thanks for the observational report :)
It is a pity Dropbox won't display in the post, is there any way you can do that?

Hey, Rainer. Do you ever do inverted images? As sharp as yours are they would look awesome!

Alexandra,

Yes, it's mine. :) I posted it directly to SolarChat because it's a fairly small file. A full-rez crop. I didn't post it to DropBox because I posted it here.

Thanks everyone from a newbie imager.

And Rainer, your image looks great inverted. It really makes the filaments stand out. It gives them a 3D appearance. They have depth!!

I have tried to figure the embedding thing out but to no avail but I did figure out how to tell the links to open to a larger image. Try them now!

It's actually Ha. The blue color does make it somewhat resemble CaK though.

Thank you Ivan. It's really nice to have the support and opportunity to post my sessions, both visual and imaging here on SolarChat. It improves my record-keeping, attention to detail and of course my imaging skills. One learns so much more from observing with a global community than one would learn observing alone. Thanks everyone!

Great images, James. Have you considered using Flickr as a host for your images? It’s easy to have them displayed on Solarchat.

That would certainly be a viable option Stuart. I'll have to check it out.

Thanks.
