May 30 2021 Observations. New active regions!

Post by DeepSolar64 »

Session time is 14:30 to 15:56 UTC. The skies are mostly cloudy so observing is intermittent. The temperature is a cool 56F. The seeing is below average to poor. Breezy.

Coronado SolarMax II 90 DS. 32x and 44.5x ( Ha )
I can see 4 active regions on the disc today. First is the tail-end of the plage from the already vanished AR12824 visible in the NW in progress of leaving us. Behind it is the plage of AR12825. I can pick up a filament running within the plage of AR12825. In the NE is the new AR12827. It's plage is almost circular with brighter patches. It's easy to see. I can see two of the spots too, one is touching the brighter plage and the other is off slightly to the west. If I go offband a bit I can see three or maybe 4 spots! In the SE I can see a double plage.

I can see a string of 4 filaments in the south above the pole. I can also see two filaments in the NE. The easternmost of these is fairly dark. I can also see a couple of small filaments associated with the receding plage of AR12824.

I can see a number of prominences on the limb. A faint one in the NE and a bright low disc hugging prom marking the receded active region AR12824 over the limb. A fainter prom lies north of this. The SE has a small fairly bright prom.

The mottles are easy today and cover the solar disc in absence of plage.

Celestron NexStar 102GT w/Altair wedge and Baader 540nm filter. 55x ( WL )
AR12824 has now largely receded from the disc and only the tail-end of the receding faculae is visible. I cannot see anything of AR12825 at 540nm. The new AR12827 shows a question-mark or fish hook shaped spot group with 8 members that I can count. The open part of the hook faces north, SDO shows a couple more. The largest spot is the westernmost one and it has a penumbra that is shown in the SDO HMI continuum image but I cannot see it visually due to the poor seeing. I need more magnification but cannot use it. South of AR12827 there is another small group in the SE. I can see three spots/pores within it. It's faculae are faintly visible.

I can see the granulation weakly at the beginning of the session with it being totally unnoticeable by sessions end.

Carpe Lumen!

James

It seems the sun is much more active than predicted, isn't it?

Hi James,

Great report, you've razed almost everything SDO sees.
You are cool, but we have the same temperature, and have you noticed the connection between seeing and temperature?

Ivan

Thank you, James. Great to see that the sun is so active at this time. Plenty of targets to shoot.

In the summer the seeing is always better in the morning before the day heats up.
