A peculiar effect around a sunspot on June 1

Post by gabrieli »

I used a 180 Mak with a 2X Powermate feeding an f30 beam into a Solar Spectrum 0.5Å filter with a ZWO 290 for the following image. I used an off band setting and saw a weird mottling effect. I don't think it's noise since the mottles
are different sizes and shapes. Any ideas what they might be?

Set up used:

The filter is attached to a temperature controller with a thick grey cable. I decided to construct a cradle (in wood for now) so that the controller rides the scope. This unclutters my table a bit. The white screen is meant to shield the controller from direct sunlight. Yes, that's a can of tuna on the counterweight shaft to refine the balance.

Looks like photospheric granulation to me.
This would be sensible since you are off-band (by how much?).
Cheers.

Your basically starting to get into the photosphere. What your seeing is convection cells starting to bleed in from the very top part of the photosphere.

I agree with the above, in the wings of Halpha you are right at the base of chromosphere and top of the photosphere :) it looks like granulation cells
