Quick Session Tal/PST mod 2/6/21

Post by DJD »

Up early this morning ( 4:45 am ). Tried an early session after the morning jobs, but seeing was horrendous.
Waited until 11:00 am and had another go. Seeing a bit better, so grabbed some SERs with my nosepiece barlow on my
Tal/PST mod.
Hopefully have a few more images to show, but here is the first pass active region.
60 frames from a 1500 frame concatenated SER.
Processed in ImagesPlus, Newtons Rings removed in Fiji/ImageJ and also flatfielded . Touched up in Photoshop and
colorised. Final touch up using Noiseware.
Hope everyone gets a session.
Best wishes,
David

Had another process of the AR, used NAFE as a final filter to pull out as much detail as I could.
(One for the purists I think ).
Hope to get some prom shots later.
Best wishes,
David

Very nice imaging. What is a Tal/PST mod?

Thank you both for your kin comments. Much appreciated.
Dan, my Tal/PST mod is a base Tal100RS scope that has an internal C-ERF filter and the Etalon and Blocking filter parts
of the Coronado PST at the rear end. Commonly called a stage 2 mod I believe.
The images above were taken using a nosepiece barlow close to my PGR Grasshopper 3 camera, giving me an approx F15
image , rather than the F10 native scope.
The session was an experiment in less than ideal seeing just as a proof of pudding.
It was partially successful in that the images were usable but the Newton Rings were a big problem that I removed in post-processing.
As a comparison, I started the session in native mode ( F10 ). here are the comparison renderings of the Active Region

Hi David,

Your TAL/PST Mod is producing great results. Image seen in full resolution is breathtaking.

Can you elaborate how "using NAFE as a final filter" is done? Software or hardware.

Thanks.

Alfred

Thank you Alfred, and congratulations on your fabulous animation.
Mark Townley put up a posting about NAFE viewtopic.php?p=286136#p286136
in the Image Processing section.
I had not heard of it, so have been playing with it with some interesting results. I find it needs to be treated gently on my images,
but the results can be startling. The final images have a bit of noise and I think it might be an acquired taste but it
is certainly a tool worth exploring. It certainly brings out contrast in what are seemingly bland areas. I have found it useful
on some of my lunar images to bring out detail in shadow areas.
Best wishes,
David

Thank you all Ladies and Gents.
Had hoped to have a session this morning but cloud cover has put paid to that so far.
I have just got back my Q-Barlow from FLO. They had to put it back together after all the
optical components fell out when I unscrewed the nosepiece part. That was todays experiment.
Just looked at the Jet stream forecast and that seems to be sitting over the UK for the rest of the day,
so perhaps not the day for high-res imaging.
Hope veryone gets a look at least today.
Best wishes,
David
