First (white) light with 180 Mak

Post by gabrieli »

I've seen some promising results with this scope to know that with improved seeing, it's a competent device for Ha.
I didn't have a full aperture white light filter for this Mak until recently and so I was anxious to try it out. Limited moments of seeing had to be accessed between passing clouds so that the number of frames was well below 1000.

I mounted Baader 3.8 solar film on an unused filter cell that happened to fit the front of the scope with a 2X Powermate and also a 2.5X OPT Barlow. I tried a 2.5X Powermate but that resulted in the common "doughnut" ghost right in the live view. For further filtering, I tried a Baader 610 nm filter, an Astronomik 642 nm filter, and a Baader SulphurII 673 nm filter. The best calming effect happened with the darkest filter - the Sulphur II. For the amplification and the moderate seeing present, I was happy with the results and look forward to bigger sunspots.

Fabulous WL Lou :bow :hamster: to cure the TeleVue 2.5x powermate problem you have to add an extra 4cm between the powermate and your camera, it then works a treat :)

Thanks for the comments and views and, Alexandra, thank you for passing on your solution to the Powermate "doughnut" problem. I can hardly wait to try it out.
