Good captures, much detailed. Looked at your blog, a 7 inch refractor is my dream

A 7" refractor quickly becomes a nightmare if the mounting cannot handle it. Most mountings cannot!
So I built a huge mounting for it. Then I "folded" the refractor with 1/20th wave, plane mirrors.
Though I still prefer it "straight through."

Hey Chris, even with you trying to hide behind one of your monsters, only goes to prove how big it is...
Interesting scopes and your even using a "quadpod" which other than accurate-mounting to the ground is different (even though my observatory-stand is also a "quodpod" design/very heavy-Duty, but with levelling-bolts..
Back to reality/Solar-views, excellent and thanks for sharing all

WoW, what a refractor! I bet it has no trouble showing granules when the seeing is good.

It is a huge and heavy beast and poorly suited to cameras with small sensors:DeepSolar64 wrote: ↑Sat Jun 05, 2021 9:53 pm WoW, what a refractor! I bet it has no trouble showing granules when the seeing is good.

That puny little, slotted angle, "quadpod" was only a test stand for my home-made mounting.
After a couple of years of having a 13' tall quadpod in my observatory I am a firm believer.
My massive pier is a four sided pyramid. Built from 4"x4" timbers and clad with 3/4" plywood for stiffness.
It supports the massive mounting and multiple OTAs thanks to being bolted to concrete footings under each leg.
Provided the legs are splayed, to match the Egyptian variety, a pyramidal pier has vastly increased moment compared to a tripod.
I placed my adjustable height footings just inside the octagonal building's perimeter. As can be seen from this early image of my solo build.
The cladding came later. The big, warehouse ladder is placed inside the pier to gain access to the 1st floor observatory.

Re: 5.06.2021 AR12828, 9 and a flare in the SW.
Thanks for the heads-up on the quad-pod and they certainly do offer advantages over single or tri-pods.
My quad-stand is nearly as tall as me (and I'm a short-*rse), but made to measure...
I can put a saucer of water on mine and hit the side "ouch", but no ripples seen. An estimate of up to two-tonnes is likely with even more possible, but hey, I can't imagine trying to balance a heavy-car on top...
Certainly the timber-construction is very well designed and made, so the use of a chain-saw for the trees , should enhance the views...
Cheers
