Session time is 15:10 to 20:32 UTC. The skies were mostly cloudy for the first half of the session with me observing very intermittently, the second half was better as the skies cleared to about 50 percent cloud cover. The seeing was decent at first worsening to below average by session's end. The temperature started off at 73F reaching 81F by the end of the session.
Coronado SolarMax II 60 DS. 16x, 21.5x and 32x ( Ha )
The first thing I noticed at the beginning of the session was a " floating prom " south of a large bright double prominence on the NE limb. The prom was shaped like a tiny comet with the head facing south. I also noticed a nice prom on the SW limb that curved up and northward. I also noticed some other fainter ones along the limb that were only visible in single-stack. These would have benefited from the use of the SMII90.
I can see a smattering of filaments in the NW to the north and east of AR12382. Three of these are really easy to see.
I can see four plage areas fairly easily with two being really easy. The new AR plage just off the NE limb is seen with it's spot and a couple of filaments at it's southern extremities. AR12832 in the NW isn't difficult either but two other tiny plages to it's east and NE are seen but are are quite a challenge. The other two plage areas are in the SE. I can see filaments associated with them with a close look. I also see a tiny plage north and another west of them. Those took some searching out! These would have again been easier in the SMII90.
The mottles are easy today and very distinct during the better seeing as session's beginning.
Astro-Tech AT72EDII w/Altair wedge and 540nm filter. 24x and 48x ( WL )
The most noticeable thing by far is the fairly large spot that has rounded the limb in the NE. It has an easy umbra and penumbra to see. It's faculae is also easily seen. The rest of the detail on the disc takes a close look to see. A single tiny pore among some low contrast faculae in the NW, a fairly easy larger pore in the SE approaching the LCM and a small pore in the SE amid a low contrast patch of faculae. This one was hard to see. All of these spots/pores are associated with systems seen in Ha.
The fine granulation of the disc is easily seen at session beginning but had become all washed out by the seeing at session's end.
Carpe Noctem!
James
I spent most of the earlier part of the session trying to get my new Sky-Watcher AZGTI mount to work. After going through the literature, guides, online info etc, I could never get the scope to track! So this one will be going back. It's already boxed back up.
