2.5h Animation of NW Sun and "Tree-Proms", Less discrepancy between SSM-Seeing, 23-6-2021

Post by H-Alpha »

Hi all,

Today I noticed that the NW proms were still beautiful and active so I tried the same long animation as yesterday. I made only one change... I was throwing cool water on the balcony and surrounding plants to keep them cool, since temperature reached 38 Celcious... It seems that the results were a bit better, because the SSM had some ups and downs and the image quality seemed to follow them for some 2h. Then deteriorated as usually despite the improving SSM values that went to the bottom once more... It may be related with the thicker atmosphere crossed by the sun as it goes down, but why SSM values do not reflect this?

No Jetstream in our area today as well.

I start with a photo of the 'Tree Prominences' at the NW. I liked them so much as they were dancing! PLEASE open in new tab, for better resolution.

Then the SSM to allow for comparisons with yesterday post: viewtopic.php?f=4&t=32382

For the first time SSM and image quality (estimated by PIPP) correlated so well! I kept only the first 2 hours data here, since after that I have the strange phenomenon of Bad seeing during very good SSM values.

Alexandros!

These are great! The animations run smooth and show a lot of detail. The color you used is really nice too. That Lunt 130MT does very well!

Hi Alexandros,
Nice and smooth animation. 2.5 hours of the Sun's life, such a huge amount of work on shooting and processing. You are definitely breaking new records. I always watch your videos with great interest. You're doing fine.

Thank you all, James, Alexandra, Ivan, Mark, Arne for your kind and encouraging words!
I feel so lucky and happy that I entered into the "solar game" this period and I subscribed in SolarChat, since the best is to come!!!
The 25th cycle has just begun and I got my scope at the right moment to be trained, so that I can enjoy together with you the solar party that is ahead of us!
:-) :-) :-)

Best wishes,
Alexandros

There must be a lot of work, Alexandros!
But every drop of sweat worth it!

What software do you use to create this videos?

H-alpha: Lunt LS50T Ha BF600, 120 ED modified by Lunt etalon. Thousand Oaks 0.9 Å Prominance filter

Yes, a lot of processing... especially if a couple of captures do not come up right and manual readjustment have to be done. I sleep very very late lately... ;-) (with the first sunlight sometimes...). But I think it is worthy, since nice things come up often and also I can improve methods to be ready for the big party when the maximum will be here. :-) Certainly I cannot go like this for long more. I am doing this now, because in about 10 days I will be away offshore without telescope of course for a long time.

I capture with Firecapture. Then Autostackkert!3 (I still have not tried several advanced options). ImPPG for convolution (this takes a lot of time until I have found the best possible curve, because it is a try and error procedure; I save one image then process in Photoshop to see the final results, and then start again if not satisfied). Then Image alignment with ImPPG again. Then Photoshop (batch process with presaved actions) for filters and colour. Finally GIMP (open as layers) to create and save the animation.

Something that I have not managed so far is to normalize the levels of images, so that there is no flickering in the animation. Minh is doing this successfully with PixInSight, but I do not have it yet.

Best wishes,
All the best,
Alexandros
