July 15 2021 Observations

Post by DeepSolar64 »

Session time is 15:47 to 16:22 UTC. The skies are partly cloudy. The seeing seems fair. The humidity is low and a breeze is blowing. The temperature is 81F ( 27.2C ).

Coronado SolarMax II 90 DS. 32x and 44.5x ( Ha )
The first things I notice are filaments on the disc! The NE has a string of them beginning at a plage in the NE stretching to the NE limb. AR12842 is seen with it's spot just to the NW of the bottom of this string of filaments. The SW shows two plages. The easternmost is AR12841. It's rather difficult to see. Well to it's west is AR12843. I can easily see a filament associated with it. I can see three filaments in a line in the SE.

I can see prominences in all four " corners " of the disc. The SE shows a bright low prom area flanked by larger fainter proms. I think an active area is coming around the limb here. We'll know tomorrow! The NE shows a single bushy prom. The NW shows a triple prom system that resembles bushes. The proms in the SW are small and fainter.

The mottles are easily seen across the disc. I can also barely pick up the spicule layer on the limb.

Celestron NexStar 102GT w/Altair wedge and 540nm filter. 55x. ( WL )
AR12842 in the NE is visible only as a single sunspot. Though fairly small I can see the umbra and penumbra. AR12843 is visible in the SW as an E-W patch of faculae with an easy large pore in it's western part. I can barely see a second smaller pore in the eastern part of it's faculae. Faculae are also present just to the south.

I can make out the fine solar granulation today.

Carpe Lumen!

James

Nice observation record, James!

Following, I post my take of some minutes after NISP you posted (but with horrible Newton's rings).

Davide,
It's still a nice image. It shows the features certainly better than I could see them visually.

I noticed the same thing, James.
I am a visual observer like you, with a camera just to record planetary observations.
I always do visual observing of anything before taking it with camera.

Sun, Moon and planets.

I saw that, with Lunt 50 and the camera, the resolution with the power of sampling, always give me more details than my eye.

Is quite silly but...that's it!

Hi James,

Looks like the vision was good today. It seemed to me that you saw everything that GONG shows. The filaments in the northeast today, even on a laptop screen in real time, were very contrasting. Thank you for the description.

James, thanks for the report, no Sun at my place, just clouds and rain.

Ivan,
Using the SMII90 I often can see much of what GONG shows. I have overall been very satisfied with this scope, even with Meade's sketchy reputation concerning Coronado.

Hi James,

SM90 is an excellent telescope, I saw it only once at the festival in 2014 and even took a photo next to it :) since then I dreamed of my chromospheric telescope.

Interesting report James, you think something maybe coming round on the SE. I wonder, Arne's latest post reminded me of that huge mega spot. His post is the 3rd July, which means that active region exited probably about 3-4 days later. So around the 6th July maybe. This means it will be back 14 days later so that will be around 20th July. That will only be in 4 days time :hamster: this will be together with the AR in north which gave that X class flare too. The next few days could get exciting :)
