Session time is from 15:00 to 15:46 UTC. The skies are partly cloudy. Seeing is definitely below average.
Coronado SolarMax II 90 DS. 32x, 44.5x and 64x ( Ha )
I can see 5 plages on the Ha solar disc. AR12842 in the NC area of the disc and an unnumbered plage in the SE approaching the LCM are the easiest to see. Another plage is visible to the west of AR12842 and another SE of it. I also can see the new plage of AR12844 in the SE not far off the limb. In addition to these 5 plages I could see a ruffled area in the Chromosphere in the SW. I see a thin curved filament within it and another filament to the east of it. This is the remnant of AR12841.
The disc shows a number of filaments in the northern hemisphere. Like the aforementioned plages they are easier seen on the GONG CT image than I could see them visually. There's a string of them in the NE and scattered ones in the NW. I can also see three of them in the far southern hemisphere.
There's not a lot of prominence activity today. The NE shows a low bright limb-hugging prom. There's a decent one that is located on the NW limb. It's dim in doublestack and shows up much better in singlestack. I can see filamentary flamelike structure and a void towards it's base. The SW shows a tiny bright prom, probably associated with AR12843 which is at the limb. I also see a small prom in the SE. There are also a few more tiny proms on the limb and the spicule layer can be seen. Overall I can see much of what GONG shows visually but GONG still shows it easier and in more detail.
Celestron NexStar 102GT w/Altair wedge 55x ( WL )
AR12842 shows 7 spots/pores and an unnumbered area to it's SE shows 8 spots/pores to my scope. These compare very well to what the SDOHMIc 2K image shows. The faculae of the new AR12844 shows one small spot within it's western edge. Another patch of faculae lies NE of it. There is a visible facula very near the SW limb. It's AR12843. SDOHMIc imagery shows a single pore within it. I could not see it.
The granulation is visible, but difficult.
I was cut short today by a thunderstorm. I barely got the scopes and eyepieces inside before the heavy rain hit. The mount got wet but with no electronics on it, it fared well.
Carpe Noctem!
James

Re: July 17 2021 Observations
Hi James,
Great description. Could you explain to me the meaning of NC and LCM abbreviations?
Of course, not everything that GONG shows can be seen, after all, these are photos that are taken from places with excellent visibility.
Thanks for the interesting reading.
Ivan

Thanks for the update James, I need to adjust my Ha red Lunt 60mm, I can not see difference in turning the brass wheel.

NC stands for North Central. LCM stands for Longitudinal Central Meridian.
Many of you here take images that do easily surpass the GONG network images and therefore easily surpass what I can see.

Sometimes tuning can be subtle. Make sure you are in focus. I can't say how many times I've not been able to get in tune only to find I am a bit outta focus.

Re: July 17 2021 Observations
Hi Maurits,
In my Lunt50, I completely unscrew the piston about once a week or so to get some air. And to see the details, I still have to screw it almost completely (there are only 2 or 3 threads left).
