The last few days here were predicted to be clear, but forest fires in Canada have brought a heavy haze throughout the entire time period. I normally would not have been out taking pictures, but I just bought a new solar guider (Hutech Hinode) and was anxious to try it out. The guider did, in fact, track the Sun very well, even through the sky was more gray than blue.
But I also noticed that the seeing was surprisingly good, even in the middle of the day. This was the case three days in a row. Contrast of the image was poor, but I'll trade some contrast for a more stable image any day. I was able to recover the contrast loss in the processing. My hypothesis is that the haze reduced heating of the lower atmosphere, providing a more stable condition. The fact that the haze is smoke and not clouds might also have something to do with it.
Here is a shot I took on 19 July. I should have taken a picture of the sky. If you had been here you would have described the sky as overcast. It really was that dense. I am surprised at how well it came out, considering the conditions.

Re: Haze
Thanks! But that's the point. My photo was taken about 3:00 PM. The seeing is normally getting so bad by that time that I close up shop and take the images inside to start processing them.

Re: Haze
That's a beauty!! very clear and crisp like Franco's image. Maybe smoke is a good atmosphere calmer?

Re: Haze
Hi Bruce
Great shot. I also noticed this effect, though not from smoke, but from light transparent clouds, especially if it is stable. True, you have to increase the exposure. The haze acts as an additional filter.
There are historical records of observing even spots through the smoke with the naked eye, especially at sunset or sunrise.
