July 25 2021 Observations. " Winnie the Pooh " AR!!

Post by DeepSolar64 »

Session time is from 14:43 to 17:07 UTC. The skies are partly cloudy and hazy. The temperature is 80F ( 26.7C ) mid-session. The seeing is well above average at session beginning falling to fair at session's end.

Again, my wife has my car with my keys and I cannot get into the cabinet where my Losmandy mount is stored for the SMII90 and Celestron 102 so I ended up using the SMII60 and AT72EDII. They still did very well though.

Coronado SolarMax II 60 DS. 16x, 21.5x, 33x and 50x ( Ha )
I can see 8 plages on the Ha disc today! AR12846 on the LCM in the northern hemisphere is easily seen. To it's east lie two large dark filaments and east of those close to the limb lie two more plage disturbances. A small but easy dark filament lies well above the eastern side of AR12846. Almost due west lies AR12848 which is easily seen. Just west of AR12848 lies a small but still not too difficult plage. AR12844 is visible in the far SW and is now approaching the limb. AR12847 is seen easily in the SE quadrant and a filament is seen between it and AR12844 in the SW. AR12849 is absolutely beautiful with it's large dark M shaped filament(s). It's plage looks bi-polar with two sections. One below the other. The rounded M shape reminds me of the ears of a bear. It's the " Winnie-the Pooh " filament and the plage is the bear's face. Rusted first came to the conclusion that it resembled a bear's face and ears! Pattern recognition in humans does funny things doesn't it!? A vertical line of filaments lies just east of AR12849. Two of these are easily seen.

I cannot see any prominences at all in double-stack so I remove the etalon to use the scope in single-stack. It brings 4 small proms into view. 1 on the NW limb with GONG showing an extension going southward. I didn't see that extension visually in the 60. I see another on the SW limb and two on the SE limb.

The mottles are easily seen crossing the disc and the spicule layer can be seen on the limb but it takes a close look.

Astro-Tech AT72EDII w/Altair wedge and 540nm filter. 24x, 48x, 72x, 86.5x and 144x. ( WL )
I can see 8 pores in the main part of AR12846 all close together appearing as two spots at low magnification. The easternmost of these are a single pore and a long bar going N-S. The SDO 4K image shows the bar as two spots but I cannot resolve them separate. I can see 6 pores in the western section all clustered very close together. SDO 4K HMIc shows 9 here. Though the seeing is good I cannot see all of them due to the small size of the scope and at 144x even with the wedge the image is fairly dim in these hazy skies. The C102 would have won the day here! I can also see three more pores northeast of the main body of AR12846. This raises my total to 11 pores. NE of AR12846 I see a double-faculae near the NE limb. I see no spots or pores in either of these. AR12844 is visible as a E-W oriented patch of faculae in the SW. All I can see of AR12847 is a single small dark spot. AR12849 shows two pores among faint faculae. I can also see a small patch of faculae in the SE just off the limb. This makes a total of seven systems visible in continuum.

5 numbered systems are on the solar disc today.

I can easily see the fine solar granulation on the photosphere today but even at 86.5x and 144x I cannot resolve the individual cells clearly. The aperture is too small and at 144x the image a bit dim through all the haze.

Nice report and nice shots of the setup James. Sounds like you need a spare key to that cabinet ;)

I sure do! I thought I had one but I have not been able to locate it. I'll have to have one made.
