August 25 2021 Observations

Post by DeepSolar64 »

Session time is from 15:28 until 16:32 UTC. The skies are partly cloudy. The seeing is well below average and the details shimmer in and out in waves. The temperature is 84F ( 28.8C )

Coronado SolarMax II 90 DS. 32x, 44.5x and 64x ( Ha )
I can see 5 active region/disturbances on the Ha solar disc today. AR12859 in the NE shows a multiple limbed plage with a dark filament within. The spot is easy too. AR12860 in the SE quad is also really easy with some spots and a filament in it's southern extremities being visible. Nice filaments are seen to the west nearly across the southern part of disc from AR12860. Two immediately west are a nice dark almost connected double with another small one just SE of them. I can also see a small round plage very near the eastern limb just north of the solar equator. Between this small plage and AR12859 I can see a small disturbance. Well to the NW of AR12859 lies a small filament. I can also make out a slight disturbance in the NW.

Prominences are small and scarce today. I didn't really spend much time observing them. I saw them in the NW, SW and SE on the limb of course.

Despite the seeing the mottles were easily seen across the disc today.

Celestron NexStar 102GT w/Altair wedge and 540nm filter. 55x and 66x ( WL )
I have gotten 5 active areas/disturbances on the WL sun today. AR12859 in the NE is nice! I can get 4 spots/pores plus a cloud of pores NNE of the main spot that hints at resolution at moments of good seeing. The main largest spot shows a projection at the top of the umbra that projects into the penumbra. Does this mean that the spot is a boy!? I can't really see any detail within the spot due to the poor seeing. I can't use any high magnification either. AR12860 in the SE shows even more spots/pores and is a grand spectacle! They are hard to count. There's at least a dozen of them! The two largest spots have irregular shaped penumbrae. I can see the faculae associated with AR12860. I can also see a small double facula NE of AR12860 very near the limb. To the east of AR12859 I see two more facular patches.

The granulation is visible but comes and goes with the seeing. Being relatively sharp one second and then barely visible the next.

Carpe Lumen!

James

Thanks so much for the great description, James. Today the Sun is especially beautiful in Ha.

A very nice description James, does that mean you were too late to view the massive prom? it must have lifted away before you got there ;)

I didn't understand why the spot might be a boy in the WL comment, I'm always a little slow with jokes but am I going to regret asking  :D

AR2860 is currently showing 12 spots and seems to have grown very fast.

Thanks James
