AR12860 Mid-Flare 28th Aug 2021_RCT

Post by Carbon60 »

It has been absolutely beautiful today. An almost cloudless sky....perfect. The only thing is, I promised to renovate an old shed for my father-in-law, which we started a couple of weeks ago replacing the outer ship-lap and we were waiting for a good dry day to cover the wooden roof with roofing felt .....and today was the day. Consequently my solar session was limited to about half an hour this morning, so I thought I'd give the RCT a run, given the increasing levels of activity and I wanted to focus my effort on hi-res imaging, particularly of AR12860. I wasn't disappointed. The seeing conditions were pretty good, resulting in a few SER files worth processing and one of these gave a quite nice result, albeit blown out in the highlights with the intensity of the solar flare, which I actually quite like.

Here it is in mono and colour:

Tomorrow looks promising too :). The shed is finished.

Thanks for looking.

Stu.

That's a lucky shot Stu! Congratulations! The blown out intensity just gives an idea of how bright the flare was.

Well done on the cracking (crackling) flare - which looks excellently captured in your image.

At least you have some decent weather for the job and the imaging, compared to here which was cloud-covered after about 10AM (local)..

Cheers

Great image, Stu, impressive detail. Always very difficult not to burn the flare area.

Hi Stu,

Very nice result! Great details. However, it will be even better if you use a SmartSharp tool for increasing of middle sized details contrast. You will immediately recognize how much more details are hidden in these semi-empty areas.

Top shot Stu! Glad the weather and the seeing obliged. Still the Midland cloud persists down here, grey cloudy and pretty chilly. We've had the log burner on a few times now to take the edge off it. We are pretty much moored stationary now for the week (apart from short runs to get rid of rubbish, take on some water and dispose of some ablutions) so if old yellow face does decide to put in an appearance i'm ready. The west seems to have benefitted the most from this late August high pressure.

Please describe this technique in more detail Valery - what software? How do you achieve this? What are the steps to follow?

Valery...

Following Marks request for more info on the processing you suggest...What software are you referring to? I use a Smartp Sharpen utility on Phototshop under the Filter/Sharpen menu. Is this what you are referring to?

Thanks,
Brian

Yes, Brian. I do mean exactly this tool in PS. It seems that Stu has paid attention to smaller and larger details and less so to middle sized details. Even finished image can be somewhat improved, but if to do this during postprocessing, the result shold be even better.

And then the image can be downsized to make it looks more pleasand and sharper.

Valery

Thanks for the tip, Valery.

I don't know if this is totally correct. I've used PixInsight Multiscale Linear Transform (sharpening the 2 and 4 pixel layers).

Stu,

I am not familiar with the tool you have mentioned, but it seems fairly similar. However I may be wrong. I believe you understand my idea.

Hi James,

To be honest, I don't know. I think it was throwing out C class flares around that time.
