Sunday Sunshine 5th September

Post by marktownley »

Hi Everyone.

After near 3 weeks of being away on the boat with the travelling solar gear, and for virtually the whole time it being cloudy (at least it didn't rain!), my first full day back at home on Sunday despite the forecast saying cloudy it was actually sunny, and so needless to say I was keen to get the scope out. I started off with an overview Ha disk and was pleased to see all the active regions and proms.

This was taken with the 50mm double stack, and i'm very keen to try out Bobs fine tuning mod for the front etalon to see if things can be improved further...

Next up I switched to the double stacked Coronado 90 for some closer views with a 2x cemax barlow and the ZWO290mm. Seeing wasn't great and I had to take quite a lot of data to get these images, still, 90mm at Ha is a nice sweet spot I can use for a decent proportion of the year, and my favourite scopes are the ones I can use most often.

I tried out my new Svbony solar finder scope too. This cost me £13 from EBay, and I have to say i'm very impressed, it comes mounted on a standard finder scope bracket and was aligned perfectly. For the money it is a no brainer, and costs a lot less than the Lunt, Televue and certainly Coronado alternatives.

I would have liked to be able to image more wavelengths but time wasn't on my side as we were busy seeing people from midday, still a nice morning in the sun and I did enjoy the visuals through the DS90 and a 15mm Televue plossl.

Hopefully I will get to observe soon!

Mark

Firstly you got a bargain from Ebay for the Sol-finder Mark. Which is better, the Coronado or the Svbony. A coincidence that I had the need to also fit another Astro Engineering AC618 Universal Solar Finder to the 'Espirit'/Na Quark scope for more accurate alignment with the Ha & CaK scopes and which also fits in place of the S-W Star Finder bracket too - now with a little self-made mount-base.

At least with your uneventful-Solar cruising, you got back in time to see the "rare of late" multiple-action and get those excellent captures too.

Thanks for sharing
Terry

Good captures, Mark, glad to see you back imaging. Funny, I also just received and tried that SVBONY solar finder on the Evostor 72mm and it works well ! I paid around $17 delivered, a real good value.

Nice images Mark

I agree the Svbony finder is excellent, had one for a while, much better than the Daystar Solar Scout one but I guess that one was made to be small.

I wonder how the Svbony solar finder would compare with the TeleVue Sol-Searcher finder on my Orion70?

Thanks everyone for the comments. Regards the finders, in terms of which is better the Coronado or the Svbony they both perform absolutely the same in terms of function, only differences and vainly the Coronado one matches the scope, but certainly in the UK to buy a Coronado finder it is £100 more than the Svbony one... The Svbony also has a finder shoe pre-mounted (and aligned) with it, whereas the Coronado only has a fitting for the clamshell mounting of the Coronados, and you have to make your own mounting for a finder shoe as per the picture. I prefer the Svbony to the Televue or Lunt versions (different designs) as my heavy handed storage means I often misalign these, whereas the coronado or svbony won't misalign.

Here is Bobs thread about etalon improvement Arne. viewtopic.php?f=9&p=306163#p306163

Very nice, Mark. Typical for the weather to improve once back home after your boat trip. At least you had a nice break.

I may end up getting a Svbony for my Orion70. I use the wedge with the C102 and it's rear ceramic disc makes a good solar finder for it.
