September 11 2021 Observations. Big NE Prominence!

Post by DeepSolar64 »

Session time is 14:17 to 14:46 UTC. The skies are clear with fair seeing. The temperature is 64F ( 17.7C ) I am heading out in a short while to visit a friend in Rock Hill S.C. I will post my next observations from there.

Coronado SolarMax II 60 DS. 16x and 25x ( Ha )
I can see 5 active regions on the Ha solar disc today. AR12864 is visible only as a mere disturbance very near the NW limb. A nice filament is visible marking the location of AR12865 but I cannot see AR12865 itself. AR12868 is visible in the SW with a few spots within it being visible with a close look, AR12866 is easily seen to it's east. AR12869 is easily seen to the SSE of AR12866. AR12870 is seen without difficulty in the far SE.

Filaments abound on the solar disc today. I see one near the NE limb. The north-central area of the disc shows two which yesterday was, or was nearly a single connected large filament running SW-NE. I can see 6 filaments which form a vertical arc on a filament centering on AR12865 in the NW. The far SE shows two easy filaments.

I see only one significant prominence on the solar disc but what a prom it is! It's a big one rising up from the NE limb leaning south on two feet! I can see mottled detail in it even with low power in the 60! The base ( feet ) and tip of the prom are brighter than the middle section. It's best seen in single-stack.

The mottling of the Chromosphere is easily seen today.

Orion 70mm Solar Telescope. 25x and 50x ( WL )
6 active regions can be seen on the WL disc today. AR12864 is seen almost at the NW limb as a single spot and faculae. The faculae of AR12865 can be seen with a close look. AR12868 can be seen as three fair sized spots with penumbrae. More smaller pores are seen in the vicinity. It's beginning to decay I believe. I can faintly see it's faculae. AR12866 is also in the process of decay. It shows a smear of spots with no large umbrae and pores. This is even easier to see in the SDO HMIc image. I can see only a single spot and a pore to the SE in AR12869. The SDO HMIc image shows an additional tiny pore. The faculae to AR12869 is barely visible. I also can faintly see the faculae of AR12870 in the SE. I cannot see AR12863 at all in Ha or WL. It's too close to the SW limb.

The fine granulation of the solar disc is visible.

Carpe Diem!

James

I've been watching that giant prom grow all morning. Could this be a CME?

Fred,
I guess it could be a CME if something under it, like a flare bearing active region being under it or near it blew it loose from the disc.

This is/was "The Jumping Cat" prominence - which has now developed to an even larger prominence at late-z on the 11th.

Image from SDO to follow soon.

Thanks James.

Good report, James.

I was clouded out for the prom when it was at it's brightest/largest, but was lucky enough to get some images of it when it was detached. Images coming..

Best regards,
Arne
