Sunday Shots - 3rd October
Hi all!
Sunday was blue skies first thing. I peeked at the crescent moon before sunrise which was nice, and just waited for the sun to come up above the houses. We are in autumn now and the air stream and seeing reflected this; great transparency but poor seeing.
I started off with the DS90 visually and enjoyed spending some time just looking through the eyepiece. There was plenty to see at 50x but the sawtooth edge wasn't proms just boiling seeing. It's nice to see surface features at all wavelengths increasing as we move forward in the solar cycle.
I decided to try some imaging and using a 2x cemax and the zwo290 the view on the laptop boiled. I opted for 4000 frame captures for the closer shots, 1000 frame captures for the full disks. These were ran through PIPP with the closeups to distil the 4000 down to 1000 then stack the best 128 in ImPPG. Sharpened in ImPPG and coloured in CS6. I know the Ha are upside down.

The maths says 90mm at Ha equals 60mm at CaK, but just from looking through the eyepiece and imaging at 90mm in Ha I knew the seeing wasn't supporting this. I know I can get much more detail at this scale when the seeing allows, but decided for the safe option and the 40mm Coronado. 2x cemax again and the big chip FLIR camera for the full disk.

And the new active region on the limb with what appears to be a decent sized spot.

The jets in calcium were obvious and very much helped with the transparency of Atlantic air. It then rained all afternoon and now has cleared as the sun drops. Just nice to see the sun again! I'm hoping my 100/800 LZOS arrives in the next couple of weeks, fancy some moon watching this winter. Anyone used the Baader Hyperion eyepieces? I might get one, but wondered if others had used them?

Hey Mark, glad you got some sun! These turned out great considering the conditions you described! Really nice resolution on the CaK despite the seeing!

Re: Sunday Shots - 3rd October
Fine set of captures Mark and the calcium and coloured Ha are my favs as quite excellent.
As for Baader Hyperion EP's are concerned, out of all my many EP's and zooms too, I've had the "8-24mm BAADER Hyperion Click-Stop-Zoom" since 2007.
Heavy and available for 1.25/2" barrels, it is ideal for both Solar and Lunar use, with a 20 mm Eye-Relief and an apparent 68° Field of View. It certainly saves all that changing of differing EP's and can still be further extended with a Barlow if desired, but with the highest magnifications, does tend to loose some light-gathering performance. Some fine focusing maybe required when zooming-in, but I never found that an issue.
I prefer to use the VIXEN 10mm Lanthium/20mm-Long-Eye Relief/50°FOV. and the VIXEN 4mm Lanthium 20mm-Long-Eye Relief/45°FOV. and also
MEADE 6•7mm srs.5000 UltraWideAngle.(UWA) and MEADE 4•7mm srs.5000 UltraWideAngle.(UWA) depending on the scope for those close-views.
+++
Not doing any observing or imaging at present, as the new mini-obsy is currently being fitted-out with the electrical-installation nearly completed today and one or two other fitments. Then the viewing-aperture is to be cut-out to completion - hopefully within the next two weeks or so, before the temperature drops too-low. Quite cosy, compared to the main-observatory and when completed will publish photos - as requested.
Intended then to try both WL and the Sodium Quark for the low-down winter Sun and also like yourself Lunar observing and imaging. Planetary when available and maybe some deeper-sky, albeit the main-obsy will be better for most deep-sky as previously.
Best Wishes
Terry

Beautiful capture and processing, Mark.
I love how you manage to get some prom details in the CaK shots as well.
Best regards,

Re: Sunday Shots - 3rd October
Very nice work, Mark. I am glad you got to see the Sun and image today. I was under cloudy rainy skies and missed out.
I have the same problem with seeing you have. Winter having worse seeing typically than summer does.
And you caught a new spot on the eastern limb!

Re: Sunday Shots - 3rd October
Excellent images, Mark. I’m finding it to be increasingly more difficult to retain detail with the change in the weather this month and a generally lower Sun at this time of the year. Somehow you manage it and even show us calcium proms. Very nice.

Re: Sunday Shots - 3rd October
Hi Stu, it's only because I dropped down to the smaller scope, using a larger aperture with poor seeing will just blur the detail there, particularly so with the proms in CaK.
