Baader Sundancer II H-alpha Filter

Post by pedro »

Has anyone tried the Baader Sundancer II H-alpha Filter?

It's not cheap but looks interesting. If anyone tried it please let us know

SPECS
• H-alpha filter with a half-width (FWHM) of 0.6±0.1Å at an effective focal ratio of f/30;
shows prominences and solar surface details.
• Integrated 3x telecentric system with 2nm Half-Bandwidth (FWHM) blocking filter.
The TZ3-system is suitable up to 35 mm field of view without vignetting. Optimal for
telescopes with f/10, recommended up to about f/8 and usable up to about f/6.5.
On optics faster than f/10, the FWHM (Full Width at Half Maximum) increases
• Easy change of the transmission line by turning the micrometer screw to observe
fast solar events in the blue wing of the H-alpha line (Doppler shift)
Resistant to ageing: The dielectric coating of the blocking filter (instead of the usual
silver coating) and the airtight storage of the Etalon filter in oil prevent the ageing
processes of simpler filter designs. With proper treatment, the filter will retain its
performance for many years

25 mm Etalon from SolarSpectrum – with 23 mm aperture behind 19 mm aperture baffle
• Removable focusable 1¼" eyepiece clamp and T-2 thread for connecting cameras
• On telescopes with up to 80 mm aperture and a focal ratio of f/8 or slower, it can be
operated without an additional D-ERF energy protection filter in front of the objective – tested for 10 hours on the Baader-Apo 95 at f/6.1
• Electrical temperature control: the filter automatically heats up to its optimum operating temperature as soon as it is connected to the power supply
• Low power consumption: Via the supplied main adapter or, in mobile use, via an
optional rechargeable battery pack
• Wide operating temperature range: -10 to +40° C; storage temperature not below
0° C

Looks very interesting Pedro, even at at the price !! (£2,877.00 available in the U.K.)
Apparently an Additional D-ERF only necessary with telescopes over 80mm

Would need to see more pics through one of these for an idea of what it can achieve and nice to see that this manufacturer has taken on-board an alternative to DayStar. Initially it does look as if the quality build is good and the vernier adjusting system is a good addition...

https://www.baader-planetarium.com/en/b ... ha-filter/ but still not enough pics to qualify this item - yet.

Cheers
Terry

My point exactly Terry. I would like to see images and first impressions. It does have a few interesting specs, mainly the 25 mm Etalon from SolarSpectrum (with 23 mm aperture behind 19 mm aperture baffle)

Thanks Pedro again and agree with your further comments.

As far as I can ascertain, the only images seen do not show any specific advantage over good Daystar-quarks or of course any other Ha scopes/filters etc.

For the money, numerous captures with the telescopes used etc., plus dates and times and also the seeing conditions etc., etc. - would be required before I would even think of parting with any dosh for one of these.

So please, if anybody can enlighten us to such imagery and technical-details of [other than directly from Baader], then please post more links, as Mark has just done... Thanks in advance..

Terry

Hello Pedro,

I had the filter for testing for 4 weeks and bought the filter after the test.

The handling and quality of the SunDancer II H-alpha filter with block filter really convinced me in the test. The filter is nice and compact, light, very quick to use and is perfect for mobile use with refractors up to f/8 and with the SCs.

Here some pictures with this filter.

Looks interesting. Something to keep an eye on as more images become available.

Indeed as Stu has said and I wonder if you/Mike has any prominence images through the Sundancer ??
Those would certainly add an interest too ??

Thanks very much

Despite my <cough> burning desire to escape from my PST etalon I have several serious concerns:

Very high cost for relatively small, clear aperture. Now add a full aperture D-ERF, plus cell, to the cost of the telescope and mounting. £10-15k minimum?

Sensitivity to frost damage. How will those outside Florida image [safely] in winter? Are you feeling so lucky that you can drop £3k on an unknown horse? Are there no immersion oils which are temperature insensitive? Never mind the oil. I know I'd be sulky!! Why no dedicated dew band or heater? Even a £3k Chinese EV would have a heater!

f/30 placing impossible demands on seeing conditions as aperture increases.

Lack of images showing off its true abilities. Why not? A few high quality images would sell it far better than any amount of advertising. With all due respect to Mike I'd want far more resolution from 8" of aperture and a claimed 0.6Å. Even if the AR umbras aren't exactly black holes. ;)

Very well said Chris and particularly from your location.

The need to see far more images of all parts of the Sun - is the only way forward for selling this expensive item.

Cheers
Terry

I think that the latest pictures Mike uploaded show the sundancer as very promising. The FOV is even in terns of illumination and also CWL / bandpass. I had initially thought 0.65a a bit 'wide' for my own personal taste, but these images look good. Seeing may not have been supportive of the aperture, but regardless of this it gives a good profile of the filters quality.

It is true that the seeing was not the best for all observations. I am personally very satisfied with the Solarspectrum Sundancer II. The focal length can be shortened very well with the 0.4 reducer. The next few months will be difficult for solar observing due to poor seeing conditions caused by the low altitude of the sun in Germany.
