October 19 2021 Observations.

Post by DeepSolar64 »

Session time is from 14:10 until 15:10 UTC. The skies are clear and the seeing is below average to poor. The temperature is 53F ( 11.6C )

Coronado SolarMax II 60 DS. 16x, 21.5x and 25x ( Ha )
I can see 4 disturbances in the chromosphere this morning. GONG Cerro Tololo actually shows 6! Only one of these are numbered and shows a spot and that is AR12886 in the SE. I can also see a bit of a disturbance SW of AR12886. A plage visible in the NE is near a couple of filaments to it's NW and SW. I can also see a plage also in the far west.

A number of filaments are visible on the disc. Two in the NE, Three in the NW and two in the far SE.

Prominences surround the limb today. I see a couple in the SE and a tall pyramid shaped one in the NE which is darker towards it's middle. I also see a bright NW flame shaped one. The SE has two. The bottom one is double with the northern one being the larger of the two. GONG CT shows a wispy trail of plasma heading off to the north. I could not see this visually.

The mottles are visible but the seeing is affecting their visibility making them appear soft.

Orion 70mm Solar Telescope. 25x and 50x ( WL )
I can see 4 areas of disturbance in the photosphere in white light. AR12886 in the SE is the easiest due to it's fair-sized spot. I can see that it has an umbra surrounded by a well developed penumbra. I can see it's faculae too. To it's SW I can see another patch of faculae. The NE shows a small but bright ring of faculae. I can barely make out a dark pore on it's western edge despite the seeing. SDO HMI continuum high resolution images show a couple of really tiny pores on the eastern side of the plage ring that were beyond my sight. The far west also shows a low contrast patch of faculae to my eye and scope. SDO HMIc also shows a tiny pore here that I could not see.

The fine granulation is difficult. Almost invisible.

Carpe Diem!

James

Glad you're getting your clear skies in James, and thanks for the report. Another day of solid rain here again, and the same forecast for tomorrow...

Thanks again James for your excellent report.

I can confirm now that a small dark-spot has surfaced within the AR at the N.E.Limb (as of 19:53z today).

A large SDO image will follow very shortly in a new post.

Wind, Rain and a rare Sun-light today, but finishing the newbie obsy for it's official-opening ceremony on Saturday and a photo-shoot too...

Cheers
Terry

Terry,
I wonder if the pore I saw in the NE grew into a spot or if it's a new one?

Good luck on your newbie obsy opening on Saturday.

James

Nice report, as always, James.
