October 20 2021 Observations

Post by DeepSolar64 »

Session time is from 14:30 until 17:00 UTC. The skies are clear and the temperature is 70F ( 21.1C ) at 17:00 UT. The seeing is well below average to poor.

Coronado SolarMax II 90 DS. 32x, 44.5x and 64x ( Ha )
I can see five plage/disturbance areas in the chromosphere today in Ha. AR12886 in the SE is easy to see because of it's spot. I can also see it's plage with the brightest part of it being east of the spot. I can also see a disturbance just SW of AR12886. I can see a filament within it. I can also see a small plage with some difficulty just across the CLM in the south. I can see a small plage area in the NW near the limb. An easier area is seen in the NE near the limb.

I can see a few filaments today. A thin one near the NE limb NE of a plage located there. I can see 5 others in the northern hemisphere being located in the NC and NW parts of the disc. None of these are large. I see three filaments in the far SSW. The Coronado 90 shows every filament shown on the Big Bear GONG image.

The only significant prominences that I see are on the NE and SW limb. The NE one shows some detail with the brighter part being in the north. Fainter parts are seen to the south. South of this prom lies another. I can hint some detail in it with seeing making it difficult. A linelike filament lies under it. I cannot tell if it is a filaprom or not. The prominence in the SW is fairly bright looking like a triangle that is lifted off the disc. The bottom isn't flat but bowed. I can't really see much detail within the prom outside of it's shape.

The mottles are visible as is the spicule layer on the limb.

Celestron NexStar 102 GT w/Altair wedge and 540nm filter. 55x ( WL )
I can see five disturbances in the photosphere today at 540nm. I see only the single spot of AR12886 in the SE trailing faculae to the SE. I see no other spots or pores there. The single spot shows a dark oval umbra surrounded by an easy penumbra. Seeing prevents seeing any detail within the penumbra or using higher power. SW of AR12886 I see another patch of scattered faculae. I see no spots or pores there. The NE shows a single small patch of faculae. I see no spots or pores within it. I can see two patches of faculae in the NW. I see no spots or pores within them.

I can weakly see the granulation at the beginning of the session but by the end it is practically invisible. The edge of the disc shimmers in waves!

Carpe Lumen!

James

Thanks James.
The N.E. AR is receding and as you have said nothing much to see of that.

There is a large oncoming AR about to enter the visibubble disk - which does look interesting over the next 2/3-days..

Cheers
Terry

Additionally James, apparently that N.E. new AR is now as of AM/Thursday showing a number of small spots and also being numbered as AR2072.
Very strange as that number is "Many Yonks" old ???

Alexandra,
I haven't done much with it lately. I've had in house family living with me lately until they find a new home. I guess I have been distracted I guess. I know I need to get back on it. With all that's going on here lately I have taken the easier way out. Observing visually certainly comes more natural to me. I'll surprise you one of these days.

James

You are welcome Arne. I'll help keep you covered in sunlight as your sun gets low. ;-)
