October 21 2021 Observations

Post by DeepSolar64 »

Session time is from 15:55 UTC until 16:30 UTC. The skies are mostly cloudy. The seeing is below average and the temperature is 68F ( 20C )

Coronado SolarMax II 90 DS. 32x, 44.5x and 89x ( Ha )
Today I can only see 3 active region plages with certainty. AR12886 in the SE is easy with it's spot and plage which is mostly to the east of the spot. I can see some ruffleage streaming south of AR12886 with some imbedded filaments. Though it interacts with AR12886 I suspect it's a different disturbance. Well to the west of AR12886 I can see a small plage. It's not overly difficult to see. The GONG CT image shows it to be a double-plage, bipolar but I didn't notice that in the scope. The NE also shows a plage

Several filaments are seen around the disc. The SMII90 shows most if not all the filaments visible in the GONG image. One in the NE, Three north and east of the disc center. One in the NW and a number of filaments in the south and southeast. A " three dot " filament near the SE limb and two nice dark ones nearing the CLM in the south.

I only noticed 3 prominences in double stack. A small loop prom in the SW and a hedgerow prom in the SE. A void is seen in the middle of the hedgerow. The third is a surge prominence on the SE limb. It's tiny but very bright. I see two tiny spikes sticking out of the tiny bright low lying mass of plasma. I'll call this one the " Red Devil " prom! They look like tiny horns! It's amazing to think that even as small on a solar scale as this bright little prom is that those little horns are probably still 6 to 9 thousand miles long. This surge prom betrays an active area's presence on the SE limb. Maybe someone will do an image with an Earth globe accurately demonstrating the size of the surge prominence! Hint..Hint... :D

The mottles are easily seen and I can also see the spicule layer on the limb.

Celestron NexStar 102 GT w/Altair wedge and 540nm filter. 55x ( WL )
Today I got three active regions on the solar photosphere. AR12886 in the SE with it's fully developed spot. Though the penumbra is easy to see, the atmospheric seeing won't let me see any detail within it or allow me to use much higher of a magnification. To the east of the spot I can see faculae streaming south growing brighter as it progresses. Though visually appearing as a single system these may be magnetically distinct. The NE shows a small group of three pores embedded in faint faculae. I can also see some faculae without spots/pores near the NW limb.

Not noticing the faculae to an emerging system at/on the SE limb during my first pass I later went back to check out that area again to attempt to see it. SDO high resolution HMI continuum images are actually showing evidence of two spots there among the faculae VERY close to the limb! Clouds stopped me from viewing that area a second time :-(

The fine granulation is visible on the photosphere with a close look.

Carpe Lumen!

James

Thank you Ivan, Maurits and Terry. That little surge prom area was very interesting to see.

Here are a couple of SDO animations of it done using Helioviewer.

It looks like there may be some minor flare activity within that region.

Nice report thanks James! Hazy here today, in other good news our 'official' covid tests came back negative which means we are good to travel to Iceland tomorrow. Just need some clear skies for a chance of seeing the northern lights, so far the week is looking unsettled and rather UK like in its weather

Excellent and detailed report James, I'm glad you could finally see a little of the new spot AR coming round :hamster:
Mark, have a great time and fingers crossed you will have some aurora pics to show us and match with Stuart's magnetometer readings :)

Mark,
Have fun on your Iceland trip. Good luck on seeing the aurora.

Blessings,
