October 23 2021 Observations

Post by DeepSolar64 »

Session time is from 14:10 until 15:14 UTC. The skies are clear with well below average to poor seeing. The temperature is 55F ( 12.7C )

Coronado SolarMax II 60 DS. 16x, 21.5x, 25x and 33x ( Ha )
I can see three active areas in the chromosphere today. AR12886 now approaching the Central Longitudinal Meridian in the south shows a single spot with a couple of patches of plage to the east and west with that in the east being easier to see. Two filaments are seen to the south of the active region. The new AR in the SE, now numbered AR12887 shows a bright plage with two embedded spots. I can see a third plage in the NE quadrant well in from the limb. Two filaments are seen NE of it. The NW quadrant has 5 filaments visible to my scope. with the best two being close together near the NW limb.

I see only two prominences today. One in the SE looks like a sloped mountain with a visible void in the brighter north part of the prom. A second longer void is seen under the sloped southern part of the prominence. I can also see a small bright elongated prom area on the NE limb. I wonder if something might be at the limb there.

The mottles are visible without difficulty today despite the seeing. I could not even hint the limb spicule area though.

Orion 70mm Solar Telescope. 25x and 50x ( WL )
I can only see two active regions on the white light photosphere today. AR12886 reveals itself only as a single spot showing both umbra and penumbra. AR12887 in the far SE is more complex. I can see 4 spots there visually. Two of these bear penumbrae. Bright faculae surround them. The SDO HMI high rez images show two additional areas. 4 tiny pores between AR12886 and AR12887 and a single pore in the NE quadrant. The SDO also shows some fainter faculae in the north and in the NW.

I could barely make out disc granulation at session beginning. None at end.

Carpe Diem!

James

Thanks for the update, James. I'm glad the weather allows you to watch. This new AR looks promising.
