October 26 2021 Observations. M1.02 Class Flare!

Post by DeepSolar64 »

Session time is from 14:30 to 18:00 UTC. The skies are mostly clear. The seeing is fair at first then rapidly degrading to poor. The temperature at the beginning of the session is 53F ( 11.6C ) and at the end is 59F ( 15C ). Windy.

Coronado SolarMax II 60 DS. 16x, 25x and 33x ( Ha )
Eight active regions are seen in the Ha chromosphere today. AR12886 is visible in the SW as a spot with a really small plage. Southeast and south of it I can see a couple of filaments. The now numbered AR12890 lies just east of AR12886. It is easy to see. I can also see a tiny plage SE of AR12890. AR12887 is large and really bright. Very easy to see. The plage shows quite a bit of detail early on before worsening seeing blurs the fine details. I can see a spot in the NW corner of the active region. A double filament lies SW of AR12887. AR12888 and AR12889 lie just west of the SE limb. A polar crown of filaments lies in the far south.

The northern hemisphere has two active areas. A faint plage in the NW quadrant. The GONG CT image shows a fine filament within it but I cannot see it visually. The eighth region lies on the NE limb and shows a nice surge prominence early on which can be seen to change from minute to minute. It dies down rapidly. I suspect a flare kicked it up. The GOES data indicates C class flares erupting at or close to this time. An hour later a larger M1.02 class flare kicks up a larger rapidly changing surge prom. I could see the flare as a brightened area but the debris it kicked up I feel hid it's full brilliance. I kept waiting for a nice set of post flare loops but never really saw any. The closest thing I saw was a small low dome shaped prom. After this event I observed a couple hours longer but never saw another significant event on the NE limb. It died back to a low simmer.

Elsewhere on the limb I see some decent prominences. A bright one north of the flare region and a tall flame on the NW limb that may be a filaprom. I could not see the filament part well visually but the GONG image shows that it is probably a filaprom. I can see a few more small prominences on the western limb in single stack. The SE limb has some nice " tree prominences ". In single stack I can see 4 of them. They branch out nicely. South of these the big mountain void prom is slowly rotating onto the disc as a filament. There is also some filaments just west of the active flare area on the NE limb.

The mottles are visible across the disc.

Orion 70mm Solar Telescope. 25x and 50x ( WL )
I can see eight disturbed areas on the photosphere today. SDO HMI continuum shows 12 counting all the visible patches of faculae. Seeing limited me of seeing some of these no doubt. The emerging flare region on the NE limb shows a spot which I didn't see at all! The single spot of AR12886 is very symmetrical. Dark umbra surrounded by an almost round penumbra. East of AR12886 I see three spots marking AR12890. AR12887 in the SE is magnificent! I see a large penumbra bearing spot in it's NW section with numerous spots SE of it. AR12888 shows a difficult single pore in it's western section of faculae and AR12889 to it's south shows 5 spots/pores to my small refractor. The SDO shows a few smaller pores that I cannot see. I can see a small patch of faculae in the NW and another patch in the NE. SE of it lies the emerging flaring active region that I didn't see at all! It's barely inside the limb. The last patch of faculae I found was SW of AR12886. I didn't notice it on the first pass.

The fine solar granulation was visible without too much difficulty early in the session but was practically invisible at the end of it.

Today was a busy day for solar. The Sun is really picking up!

Goodnight everyone.

Carpe Noctem!

James

Hi James, I'm glad you got to see something interesting. The sun is very beautiful now. I've also seen reports of outbreaks, but it's cloudy here. I wish you a clear sky to continue observing.

Hi James,

It was indeed a busy day on the Sun. There were so many activities to observe. I missed the M-class flare. I was distracted by AR2887. As activities pick up, I will have to get use to missing other big events when focusing on one.

Thanks James and as Alfred has said, getting to see the whole picture of events as they happen, is why your observations + mine as well via SDO etc., have got to be helpful..

AR2891 has apparently been assigned to the very active newbie at the N.E.

Thanks for your latest report

Terry

Thanks and welcomes everyone. Watching those outbursts yesterday was very interesting. The sun can change so fast. It's very dynamic!

Blessings,
James

Sounds like you had a really interesting session. It is amazing to watch these M Class events and think, wow, I'm being showered with X-rays at the moment and nobody else knows :)
