October 27 2021 Observations

Post by DeepSolar64 »

Session time is from 14:30 until 15:25 UTC. The skies are mostly clear with below average seeing. The temperature is 50F ( 10C )

Coronado SolarMax II 60 DS. 16x and 25x ( Ha )
I can see seven active region disturbances on the Ha disc today. AR12886 in the far southwest is visible as a single spot with a tiny plage. Just east of it lies AR12890. A filament lies south of AR12890 and AR12886. AR12887 is the largest and brightest active region on the disc. It's large plage contains a couple of visible spots and a filament. AR12888 and AR12889 lie east and northeast of AR12887. AR12889 is the easiest to see. AR12888 has a blotch of a filament on it's NW edge. I can barely make out a disturbance in the NW quadrant. The area that produced the M-class flare yesterday has now rotated into view in the NE and has been given the number AR12891. It's a spot with a bright plage east of it. I see no sign of flare activity this morning. Three filaments lie NW of it. Other filaments on the disc include a south polar belt and two filaments SW of AR12887.

The NE and NW limb shows nice prominences today. I see a twinned one in the NE with the southern component being larger and brighter. A " floater " lies south of these. The NW shows a moderately bright prom showing nice vertical striations. Below it lies a slightly brighter disc hugging prom. The proms are best seen as usual in single-stack.

The mottles are easily seen today.

Orion 70mm Solar Telescope. 25x and 50x ( WL )
I got nine regions in the white light photosphere today. AR12886 in the far NW shows a round spot with both umbra and penumbra being visible. I see no other spots or pores there. I cannot see faculae yet there either. Just east of AR12886 I can see two small spots belonging to AR12890. AR12887 is a mass of spots and numerous pores. Four of the spots bear penumbrae. I can see no faculae to the system for it's too far away from the limb for them to show up. AR12889 to the east of AR12887 shows 6 spots/pores to my small scope amid faint faculae. The faint facula of AR12888 is visible with a close look above it. An easier facula is visible near the SE limb east of the previously mentioned active regions. Going back to the SW I can see some faculae in the SW below AR12886. The new AR12891 just inside the limb is easy to see. I see three spots with the larger showing umbra/penumbra structure. Faculae surround them. A low contrast patch of faculae can be seen with a close look NW of AR12891.

The fine solar granulation can be seen with a close look.

Carpe Diem!

James

Thanks for the latest report James.
Apparently there are as many as 41-spots currently on the FD...
AR2891 is now showing 4 or 5 of those and one is very-long and like a "Butter-Bean" May well be more when the full AR rotates into view...

Cheers
Terry

Terry,
41 spots! WoW. I think we are past the long doldrums of solar minimum. And I like butterbeans too!

You are welcome, Maurits.

You are welcome Eric and I will check yours out when you post them.

Thanks for the report, James, I wonder you were able to observe all these flashes today? We have clouds for a long time.

Ivan,
I missed the Sun entirely today. Cloudy and rainy. The X-Class happened at the time I would have been set up too. So disappointed I am  . Tomorrow doesn't look much better. Clouds/rain predicted and I am having a lot of dental work done. I dread it.

Blessings,
James

Alexandra,
Coming solar max I will be writing a book!! Recording my visual data may become as time intensive as imaging is.

James, don't be afraid, everything will be fine when I go to the dentist, try to think about pleasant things, or, on the contrary, think about problems that are more serious than the fear of the dentist. I'm with you!

Good luck at dentist James :( there are two things in life which trigger very bad panic attacks for me and that is Dentists and Spiders. How either are allowed to live on this planet is beyond me :(

I absolutely agree.
I would also add one more fear that dentists cause me - this is the fear of a huge bill for their services :)

The dental visit went well and my tooth extractions were painless. He was very informative and professional. But yes, the bill is huge. Fortunately my dental insurance covers most of it. But now the anesthetic is wearing off....

So far I am under clouds again today.

James
