4th November 2021

Post by Montana »

I was working from home so managed to get a quick couple of images in my lunch hour with the PSTs. The seeing was horrendous but the images didn't seem to come out too bad :)

Alexandra,
Wonderfully done in both lights. I would love to have a CaK Coronado PST. It's a shame they are not manufactured anymore. The price of the Lunt CaK modules have went up close to 200 dollars this year vs the last. I am considering a cheaper double stacked Calcium K line filter from Baader. Any opinions on that?

Interesting question James. I heard from Bob Yoesle who has the ear of Lunt that the cost of producing the CaK filters has gone through the roof. Soon they will stop making them as they are not a going concern. This is exactly what happened to Coronado. If you want to do CaK I would jump on the band wagon as soon as possible if you can.

However, a Baader K line filter is 80A wide and not a CaK filter, therefore most of what you see is white light. All it does is enhance the faculae towards the middle of the disc rather than just seeing it at the edges in white light. If that is what you wish then fine. This filter also comes in handy another way (if the filter is good quality). Keep your eyes on the classified adds for old CaK PSTs, even if the owner says it is a dud get it anyway as the CaK filter is the valuable part and that rarely fails. What fails is the eyepiece filter, like mine has done. I had to remove it and place the Baader K line filter in there instead. This is for camera only!!! however, my Baader K line has always degraded my images ever since I bought it, I fear there is something wrong with it. I should have done something about it at the beginning and now it is too late. But my CaK PST images are now not clear as they used to be with the degraded eyepiece filter. Ho hum..

Thanks for the information Alexandra. It sounds like soon that DayStar with the CaK Quark may become the only CaK filter commercially available new.

The K line is made up of 2 filter elements, take out the retaining ring on the front and try it with just one of the elements, my money is the coating has failed on one of them. It would be a real bum deal if it failed on both so I reckon you've got half a chance ;)

I have just bought a Lunt CaK B1200 filter so it sounds like my timing was spot on ! :D

Alexandra:
A nice session in spite of the bad seeing.
BTW, I use an old Coronado CaK PST filter, plus a K line Baader filter, and lately the Baader Venus filter instead of the K line one, it works nice for me.
Best regards,
Eric.

Thanks Eric :)

We have to be careful with the Baader Venus filter Eric, the modern ones don't cover CaK wavelength so can't be used with a PST. I think you have quite an old version :)
