November 30 2021 Observations. Increased activity in the North!

Post by DeepSolar64 »

Session time is from 16:36 to 17:06 UTC. The skies are clear with below average seeing. The temperature is 54F ( 12.2C )

Coronado SolarMax II 60 DS. 16x, 25x and 33x ( Ha )
I can see six plages in the Ha chromosphere today! AR12898 is visible by it's easy plage and spot in the SW. Southwest of it lies AR12900 nearing the limb. It's visible by it's easy plage and two spots. In the SE I can see the small plage of AR12903 fairly easily. North of it in the NE quadrant I can see a small plage amid a larger disturbance with a couple of filaments. This is AR12901. AR12902 is visible on the Central Longitudinal Meridian and is seen as an elongated plage. A filament lies between AR12901 and AR12902. Immediately to the west of AR12902 lies a disturbed area with a low contrast curved plage. An easy long thin filament is seen there too! The southern hemisphere has decreased in activity over the last 3 days while the northern hemisphere is increasing!

I can see filaments in the southern hemisphere as well. One dark one SE of AR12898, another on the CLM further south and a couple in the SE quadrant.

Removing the stacking etalon I can easily observe three prominence areas on the limb. The SW shows three. The northernmost one has a void at it's base and the center one is small. The southernmost one shows better detail and is larger than the other two. Two voids are within it. I see 4 on the SE limb. One of these is a pointy pyramid! The NE shows a fainter prom with it's southern part being brighter than it's northern part. Mottles and voids are seen within it.

The mottles cover the solar disc and are easily seen.

Orion 70mm Solar Telescope. 25x, 50x and 62.5x ( WL )
I can see five active regions on the continuum photosphere. Three spots in the SW quadrant. The easternmost of these belongs to AR12898. It shows both umbra and penumbra. SW of it lies the easternmost spot of AR12900. It too shows umbra/penumbra structure. NW of it lies AR12900's other spot. I see umbra and penumbra with it too. I see no other spots or pores with these systems but I do see faculae. AR12903 shows a small spot and a pore well east of the spot. SDO reveals a tiny pore close to the spot but I cannot see it. I can only see a single spot associated with AR12901in the NE. SDO shows a very tiny pore to it's NW. I certainly could not see this one! AR12902 on the CLM in the north shows 4 spots to my scope. Three close together with the 4th just SW of them.

The granulation is visible but not well seen.

Carpe Lumen!

James

Many thanks James for your usual excellent visual report.
Things have been building over the last 48-hours and you have mentioned that..

Cloudy all day and busy with an important job.

Terry

Thanks for alerting me Terry. I had AR12903 mislabeled as AR12893 on the white light section of my post. I changed it to the correct number. I also had mentioned 4 systems in WL. I actually had five. AR12898 and AR12900 are separate systems magnetically even though they appear as one in the scope. I had it right in the Ha part of the post.

I can be lame sometimes.....

Lame James.

P.S. I have a lot to do tomorrow like you were busy today. I may not have time to pull a scope out. It may be the quick backup. The Lunt SUNoculars!
