Sunspot group 17th Dec 2021

Post by Carbon60 »

Unexpectedly clear skies gave me an opportunity to image the fabulous sunspot group this morning. The conditions were not ideal (lots of contrails, haze and poor seeing) but I figured I'll take what I can get, given the paucity of good weather days these past few weeks.

I also took a few images in CaK and Ha. The Ha FD was particularly difficult with variability between panes. I had to settle for an inverted view with additional processing to try to even out some of the different panes.

First up is the sunspot group at 430nm:

Here's a CaK FD four pane, which just about worked given the conditions. A second set of four looked really patchy.

....and the Ha quadrant and FDs

I can't believe how lucky I was with the weather (even with poor conditions) given the forecasts were for clouds all week.

Thanks for looking.

Stu.

Very nice indeed Stu, i'm hoping the clear patches rotating in this area of high pressure we have at the moment will head my way. Just grey today here, glad it cleared for you.

Debating weather your captures are the best so-far of this long AR complex as well as including the two northern AR's Stu.

My answer is the best so far and along with Alexandra's excellent CaK captures of today/17th, are good enough for an accurate count of the number of spots - if you get a chance to beat James ???

Thanks for sharing and await with patience to hear your reply...

Terry

Thanks Stu and you are so far the winning-team, as earlier today was 67 and this evening down to 63, but keep counting as more is expected very soon - over the border of the S.E. & the N.E. Limb too.

WoW Stuart!! These are simply stunning! Very nice detail and beautiful coloration! The Sun is excellently well presented in your images. I have a 430nm filter and I should use it more!!

Stu,
I really like the last inverted Ha full disk image. I love how the filaments stand out on the disk.

Great results in spite of your conditions Stu. Your White Light captures never cease to amaze me.
