The Christmas Sun: One Year Apart

Post by SoumyadeepMukherjee »

It was on 25th December 2020 when I started my project on sun, imaging it everyday. Today marks one year since the beginning of the project. Meanwhile at lot has changed. The solar cycle 25 has peaked and the image displays the same. Last year, we had only 2 sunspot regions, and today, we are having 9 shnspot regions on the same day. The sunspots have moved closer to the equator too, an indication of growing activity in the sun.

Merry Christmas to all!

Your project is a bit like mine. You image every day you get an opportunity just like I observe visually everyday weather allows. While the peak of Cycle 25's solar maximum is still 3+ years away I am really surprised on how well it's progressing as your images show. Does it mean we are going to reach solar max sooner with this being a short cycle or does it mean it's going to be a stronger cycle than many have predicted? Time will tell.

Here are the Ha GONG images for December 25 2020 vs December 25 2021.

There is quite a bit of difference in Hydrogen-Alpha too, as expected.

These are great :bow :hamster: I wonder what next Christmas will bring :hamster:

I'm hoping this will be the strongest solar cycle ever!
