December 25 2021 Observations. A C-hristmas Flare!

Post by DeepSolar64 »

The session time is from 15:40 to 17:10 UTC. The skies are clear. Even though the AstroSpheric app has the seeing as poor, at the beginning of my session it looks actually a bit above average. By session's end it's still fair/average. It was a bit off this time! The temperature is 54F ( 12.2C ) at session's beginning and 63F ( 17.2C ) at session's end.

Coronado SolarMax II 60 DS. 16x, 25x and 33x ( Ha )
I got ten active area plages on the Ha disc today! 6 in the southern hemisphere and 4 in the northern hemisphere. The complex of AR12907-08-09 is on the SW limb and is visible in three " waves ". I can see a tiny bright dot in the plage close to the limb. SDOAIA304 imagery shows a bright dot with a surge prom emanating from it. I am not sure what this object is. It may be a really small flare or just a really energetic area in the plage. I counted this complex as " one ". Three nice filaments lie to the south-southeast of this complex. The south-central area of the disc has three active region plages visible. The brightest is AR12917 which displays a C3.09 flare at 15.58UT. Though small it's not difficult to see. AR12914 to the NW is not difficult to see but AR12912 takes a close look to see. Even at this low magnification I can see three fine filaments among the plages there. AR12916 in the SW shows it's spots easily with a line of them east of the larger spot bridging the plage. The spots don't really resolve well and look like a cloudy curved line, almost filament-like. I can see two filaments SE of AR12916. Just east of AR12916 I can see a light low contrast disturbance near the SE limb. It's currently unnumbered, however this faint disturbance shows a small brighter area within it. SDOAIA304 shows a small triangular shaped surge prom there. If I would have not seen it on the SDO image beforehand I would have totally overlooked it!

North of AR12916 in the northern hemisphere I can see nothing more than a light textured area in the chromosphere. It is currently unnumbered. West of this disturbance but still in the NW quadrant I can see the plage of AR12918. It's spots too are visible as an unresolved curved line. West of it lies the plage of AR12915. AR12911 is seen further west in the NW quadrant.

The mottles are easily seen across the disc today.

Orion 70mm Solar Telescope. 25x, 50x and 62.5x ( WL )
I got 7 AR disturbances on the WL disc today. I can only see 1 spot in the AR12907-08-09 complex near/on the SW limb. Faculae are visible there. To the east I can see three tiny spots in AR12912 with a fourth somewhat larger one to the NE. AR12917 is seen as only three tiny pores in a triangle formation. AR12916 in the SE quadrant is a grand sight! Almost all the spots are encased in penumbrae. The western spot is solitary and shows a dark umbra surrounded by a penumbra. I can see some mottling in the penumbra at 50x and 62.5x. I also see a lighter colored area in the southern part of the penumbra which is confirmed by the SDO HMI continuum image examined afterward! An unnumbered single spot bearing patch of faculae is seen east of AR12916 very near the SE limb. Another patch of faculae is shown south of this facula but I didn't notice it.

AR12918 in the NE quadrant is a pretty sight. It's a hook-shaped group of small spots and pores. The spots in the easternmost part of the hook are encased in penumbrae. AR12911 is visible in the NW quadrant as a low contrast patch of faculae. SDO HMIc images show a small patch of faculae NW of AR12911 near the limb. I didn't see it.

The fine granulation of the photosphere is easily seen today across the disc.

Merry Christmas Everyone!!

James

Alexandra,

Peaceful it was. :-)

Ivan,
Lately I have been lucky on catching flares!

I imaged today for the first time in months. I'll post them if any turned out well.

Exactly, I was a little mistaken, and it seems in several posts, thanks for correcting.
So far we have nothing to catch except snow :) The only joy is the pictures from GONG, your reports and, of course, photos of other participants.
