26.12.2021 AR2916 white light in snow and frost..

Post by Rusted »

Still struggling for sharp focus in H-alpha. Cloudless sky, but low sun at 55N.
Hard frost 18F [-8C] air temperature. 21F [-6C] inside the dome meant dewed optics.
The flexible dome skirt was frozen in place with snow and ice until I cleared it all manually.
Hours of heat bands and repeated use of the hair drier on the D-ERF, objective, filters and etalon didn't help much.
Even the GPCs were misting over as I fitted them to the camera nose. More blasting with the hair drier.

I was getting a glazed, "frozen rain" look on every processed image out of ImPPG at default settings.
Imagined the camera sensor was dewed but it wasn't. SharpCap said the camera was at 23C [73F.]

So just before lunch I removed the entire H-a filter stack and etalon for a quick, white light capture.
Left the Baader D-ERF in place. Lacerta 2" wedge. ZWOASI174MM + 2.6x GPC on the 1.25" nose.
Not a great image but I have to be grateful for any sign of the sun in winter.

I think you did very well, Chris, with your high magnification image in the winter conditions. I also was out yesterday and the Ha proved very difficult to focus, still going through the results to see if there is anything worth posting.

This is a fine image and close-up of 2916 Chris - showing a lot of the detail surrounding the spots.

Thanks for your cold efforts.

That sounds chilly :( so different to here in the UK where it is mild but cloudy. That's an excellent WL, you should take them more often :bow :hamster:
