Alexandra asked "why oh why is the weather so terrible" :(
As Alexandra has asked :- "why oh why is the weather so terrible " -- there is a simple answer..
No doubt referring to the U.K. weather of late, with so much cloud, cloud, cloud & fog, fog, fog & rain, rain, rain.
This is largely due to the fact that whilst there have been so-many Sun-spots of late (after that very-quiet spell on the Solar-disk), then of course it follows that those spots have been blocking-out the normal heat that the Sun would give, which in turn would burn-off the clouds, that have been giving us this awful weather...
Now if you believe that, then you'll believe anything !!
That answer would be typical of what the press/media might say...
The two attached weather charts, show what is now and what is likely in five days - on the 1st January 2022.
In between these two dates, it will be warmer, but warmth is still likely to produce clouds and rain at this time of the year, so we just have to be patient, as things will or should get better - sometime..

Re: Alexandra asked "why oh why is the weather so terrible" :(
Northwest Europe’s clouds are caused by the Gulf Stream which brings warmer waters from the Gulf of Mexico, flowing off the east coast of North America crossing the North Atlantic and then splitting into a couple of smaller currents bringing warmer waters and clouds associated with it to the British Isles, Ireland and much of Northwest Europe. On the plus side it makes it a bit warmer than it would otherwise be for a latitude that far north.
For every downside there is often a silver lining.

Re: Alexandra asked "why oh why is the weather so terrible" :(
Well answered that James.
That's the techie-stuff and at this time of the year, with the cold influence from the North, meeting the warmer-air (as you described), is for our "Temperate Climate" / (Temperamental-Climate - as I call it), why weather-forecasting is only accurate for up to five-days (with current technology) and as those days increase to the "five-days/120-hours" charts, from the Analysis/Actual day-one chart, the forecasts become less accurate/reliable...
That has been the forecasting situation for numerous years...
Thanks James

Thanks Terry I go with all the science stuff (being a scientist in profession) but I think it is more like:
One week off work + lots of solar telescopes + AMAZING solar active regions = Clouds, clouds, clouds
Lots of solar telescopes + At work / absolutely nothing on Sun = amazing blue sky days

Re: Alexandra asked "why oh why is the weather so terrible" :(
What about the rest of us here in the UKY-atmosphere James ??
Yes that certain is another way of describing your (and others) situation Alexandra - which is why I no longer have that scenario, as 99% of my time is spent at home now (COVID risk reason), but fully retired too.
But because of that, perhaps I am the cause then, for all the murk above us ??

Hi,
Interesting stuff but what about ..
STOP buying solar filters and telescopes in the UK !
that is why you have so many clouds ...

Nice one Rainer
I think you really meant stop using such, as many of have already disobeyed your suggestion/ORDER
Perhaps it might be prudent to suggest to us UK'rs to move to say Portugal and take a tip from Pedro ??

I so wish I could, Pedro. Thank you. If Steven ever heads back your way and I know well in advance maybe I can hitch a ride!

Re: Alexandra asked "why oh why is the weather so terrible" :(
Hi Pedro, if it takes some of the weather-jealousy away from me at least, then yes originally from my local airport to Portugal - would be well nice, interesting and exciting (as long as I and the aeroplane don't bring British weather along too)... Many thanks for the offer and I would certainly enjoy and remember the experience of both seeing your observatories and the beautiful weather available - for it's use...
But (and there's nearly always a "but"), neither EasyJet or Ryanair (or any other airline) are able to financially operate from my local airport now, as thanks to COVID, their passenger numbers are too low from and to there... Could be like that for a very long time too...
Very true James, probably around 8-hours in GA aircraft and as said above, much less (1.5)-hours by airline - whenever that might be available again or from some other airport... Been a while since I did such a long-range GA flight to one overseas-destination + any other onward travel...
Who knows what the future will hold for many of us...
Best Wishes for 2022 and beyond...

Re: Alexandra asked "why oh why is the weather so terrible" :(
I understand you Alexandra, this year I think it has been one of the cloudiest in Venezuela, it is as if the intertropical convergence had been parked over Venezuela and then it was a train of tropical waves one behind the other, very frustrating.
