January 1 2022 Observations. Tree Proms on SE limb!

Post by DeepSolar64 »

Session time is from 16:40 to 17:45 UTC. The skies are mostly cloudy and the seeing is well below average to poor. The temperature is a record breaking 71F ( 21.6C ) !! Windy. It certainly does NOT feel like January.

Coronado SolarMax II 60 DS. 16x and 25x ( Ha )
I got eight active region/disturbances in the Ha chromosphere today! AR12916 nearing the SW limb is easy to see with it's plage bearing three spots that cross just north of the plage's center. The plage of the new AR12923 is seen easily just south of AR12916. AR12919 is seen well NE of AR12916. It has an easy visible thin bowed filament crossing it's plage. To the east of AR12919 lies an unnumbered plage that is a bit harder to see but is still visible with certainty. To it's SE lies the plage of AR12922 which is not too hard to see. SE of AR12922 in the far SE quadrant inward of the tree proms located on the limb lies a disturbed area that was a challenge to see but I got it. It's very low contrast and appears as more of a slightly lighter ruffled disturbance more than it does as a true plage. I am surprised I got it at all with the 60. I can see AR12918 near the NW limb as an easy plage. This system spawned an M-class flare earlier in the day. A mere low contrast disturbance is seen just east of it resembling the similar region in the SE quadrant.

Several filaments are seen without difficulty across the solar disc. Three are seen SE of AR12916 that stand out easily. SW of AR12922 lies another small dark filament. AR12919 contains an easy filament. I can also see a small filament without difficulty in the NW quadrant. The NE quadrant has a small visible filament very near the limb. It was a challenge to find.

Prominences are nice today, even in double stack at these low magnifications. The SE limb has most of the prominence activity with a row of beautiful treelike proms visible there. South of these lie another prom with a void low center. I can see a tiny fairly bright prom on the SW limb.

The mottles are visible across the solar disc.

All in all I can see most of what GONG shows today but GONG shows more detail than what I can see visually.

Orion 70mm Solar Telescope. 25x and 50x ( WL )
I got four active regions on the WL photosphere today. AR12916 in the SW quadrant shows it's three spots well. All three show umbra/penumbra structure. They are seen surrounded by scattered faculae. AR12923 is visible to it's south as faculae that contains a couple of pores. AR12922 is visible as two pores and a small spot that lies at it's westernmost end. AR12918 is easily visible as a patch of faculae very near the NW limb. High resolution SDO HMI continuum images show a couple of very tiny pores there that are beyond my sight.

The granulation is really soft but is still visible with a close look.

Happy New Year SolarChatters!!

Seize the Year!!

James

Yes James, just seen the long line of proms at the S.E. Limb on SDO.. In a couple of days or so, there is an approaching AR system which might add to the expected quiet disk then..

Thanks vm

Terry

Great report James, thanks! How warm it is with you, but with us it is gloomy and snow. True, everyone has a vacation until January 10th. New Year is our national holiday :)
Happy New Year!

Ivan

Happy New Year James, and nice report! My brother kept sending me pics from his house in Zirconia of blue skies while we have had cloud cover for over a week now, getting a bit jealous!!

Thanks and welcomes everyone!

Ivan,
A weather front is moving through here in western North Carolina. A big cooldown is forecast with a winter weather advisory tonight. We might even get a few inches of snow tonight! I certainly don't see any solar sessions happening today.

Rigel123
Zirconia!? That's a 10 minute drive from my house, down at lake Summit if we are talking about the same place! Years back I would sneak down there to fish the lake without a permit.

Blessings,
James
