January 3 2022 Observations. Calming Sun.

Post by DeepSolar64 »

Session time is from 17:40 until 18:30 UTC. The skies are partly cloudy with poor seeing. The temperature is a cold 34F ( 1.1C ). Windy. We had about an half inch of snow this morning.

Coronado SolarMax II 60 DS. 16x and 25x ( Ha )
Today I can see 4 regions of disturbance in the Ha solar chromosphere. I can see a plage both above and below the solar equator in the west. East of the southern one in the southwest I see the plage of AR12922 just west of the CLM. The far SE shows a small plage below a filament close to the limb.

I can see several filaments around the disc. A scattering of them in the northern hemisphere and two in the SW quadrant. One in the SE quadrant.

I can see a couple of small prominences on the SW limb marking the disappearing AR12916 and one small one on the SE limb. Several other fainter ones are shown by GONG Big Bear around the disc including a larger one on the NW limb. I never could see them in double stack. I should have removed the stacking etalon to brighten these up to visibility. Alexandra gave me a good view of them in her images though!

The mottles are visible but soft in the poor seeing.

Orion 70mm Solar Telescope. 25x ( WL )
I can see only the faculae to the receding AR12916 on the SW limb. SDO continuum images barely show a spot there very close to the limb. I could not see it. I see no other details on the sun, no granulation either. The limb edge shimmers and looks rough in the poor seeing. I didn't bother with going to higher magnifications.

Today's session music it Tchaikovsky. Favorite Waltzes. LaserLight Digital.

Carpe Lumen!

James

Indeed a "calming" Sun James, but not all is lost, as this morning/4th, two newbie AR's with spots appear in my next post today.

Thanks vm for sharing your reports

Thanks for the report James.

The sun on Monday had limited Ha features and I'm sure WL would not have shown much.

There was what looked to be some new activity on the eastern limb...hope they produce some new AR's.

Alexandra,
I actually did better with proms today than I did yesterday. I'll post today's report shortly.

Stuart,
Still, even if quiet the Sun always has something to show.

Thanks for the report James, The sun was very calm on January 3rd.
We didn't have clear days this year, only clouds and snow.

I see that in your area the temperature has dropped sharply and snow has fallen. Hope it didn't cause too much inconvenience.

Tchaikovsky is great, as well as disco. And this is my favorite song, the song of my childhood, I often listen to it, here is the version in English:
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=qpCgmXjCq4c
And this is performed by a large children's choir in 1990:

Ivan,
Both of these are great my friend. I especially love the first one! It has depth. One's musical tastes says much about them. And it's nice you had such musical tastes in childhood. Until the age of 18 I listened for the most part to what every other kid listened to. Over the years I have found that there is so much great phenomenal music out there than what is generally considered popular.

I like disco too, but I grew up in the disco era say from 1974-1981. I have told people before that back then I was old enough to listen but not old enough to participate!

Though I naturally understand English, my native language I do listen often to music sung in other languages, especially Irish and Scottish Gaelic and Nordic languages like Swedish and Faroese. French is nicely sung too!

Though I haven't heard as much Russian in song I hear that it too is beautiful.

Blessings,

James

Thanks for listening to them James. And I'm glad you liked it.
Your musical interests are very broad, this. I'm impressed. I also like different music, but, of course, my musical knowledge is not comparable to yours.
The most unusual thing that I listened to was an album of European secular music from the Middle Ages.

Ivan,
Some music from the Middle Ages, or music based on it is awesome. You hear a lot more music from the lute and hurdy gurdy in those days! I generally like folk music anyways.

I listen to Celtic music a lot. And then there is Appalachian folk music and bluegrass.

I don't remember exactly, it was a disc, the booklet of which lists the names of musical instruments, there was definitely a lute, a horn and a block flute, and many others. I am amazed at your knowledge James.

I like Celtic music, but, in my opinion, modern arrangements or variations on the theme of medieval music sound much richer and more interesting than an authentic performance.

I listened and read about Appalachian and bluegrass music. It is similar to country music, beautiful and very fast, energetic and positive. Perhaps this is one of the roots of rock and roll.

Thank you James, if it weren't for you, I would never have known about this.

Ivan,
Check out Loreena McKennnit's " An Ancient Muse " album. This one has a very Middle Eastern sound with many old school traditional instruments. Her voice is beautiful and she's a wonderful storyteller. I got to attend one of her live concerts a couple of years back and she's absolutely wonderful!

Appalachian and bluegrass are what country should be. More back to it's roots. More traditional. Real. Modern country isn't country anymore but country-flavored pop with a little hip-hop thrown in!

Many modern medieval music groups are cool. Look up " Blackmore's Night " on YouTube or elsewhere. They are medieval and renaissance music with a modern twist.

And I learn from you too, both musically and solar too!

Blessings,

James

James, I listened to Loreena McKennith and Blackmore's Night. They have wonderful voices, especially Loreena, she is amazing. Blackmore's Night has a concert with Russian subtitles, it was cool. By the way, I heard "The Circle" on the radio before, but I didn't know that it was Blackmore's Night.
They are excellent performers, now they are among my favorites.
