January 4 2022 Observations. Perihelion Sun.

Post by DeepSolar64 »

Session time is from 17:00 to 17:33 UTC. The skies are clear with below average seeing conditions. The temperature is 38F ( 3.3C )

Coronado SolarMax II 60 DS. 16x and 25x ( Ha )
I can see six areas of activity on the Ha chromosphere today! The contrast is pretty low on all but one of the active regions and the attached GONG Big Bear image except for color is quite close to the visual view.

AR12919 is visible in the far west just south of the equator and is approaching the solar limb. GONG Big Bear shows a filament within it but I cannot see it visually. Just southeast of it I see another pale disturbance. Well NE of AR12919 I can see another small low contrast plage. AR12922 is located SE of AR12919 and is seen as a very tiny but slightly easier to see plage. GONG Big Bear shows a thin filament SW of it. I could not see that filament visually. AR12924 is the only easy to see system on the Ha disc today. It's visible as a plage with a spot in it's NW corner. The far NE shows another low contrast plage near the limb.

The only filament that I can see on the disc is a large shaded one near the far SE limb.

Prominences are seen a bit better for me today than they were yesterday. I can see three on the limb in double stack. One in the SW that is easy and has a top leaning south. The NW has two. The northernmost of these is dim but fairly large with a vertical bar in the middle. A smaller brighter one is seen south of it.

The mottles are visible but soft today.

Orion 70mm Solar Telescope. 25x and 50x ( WL )
I got four areas of activity on the WL photosphere today. AR12919 is visible in the west as a faint patch of faculae. Due north of it in the NW quadrant is another patch of faculae that took a couple of tries to find/see. AR12924 is the only system that is easy to see today and is the only system to display a sunspot. A single spot in the NW corner of the system of faculae. The SDO HMI continuum image shows another facula NE of AR12924 very near the limb and yet another practically on the limb SE of AR12924. I could locate neither of these. With difficulty I was able to find/see a faint patch of faculae near the NE limb. The SDO HMIc shows a single pore in the southern part of the faculae but again I could not see it.

The granulation is visible with difficulty today.

I barely was able to complete the observations for today. I had a terrible headache, one so bad that it made me dizzy and sick at my stomach. After quickly stowing my equipment I called into work and went to bed. Naturally work treated it as COVID-19 and I have to get tested before going back to work, Thursday if I test negative. I'll get tested tomorrow. My daughter has COVID-19 and I got tested last week with a negative result. Personally I think it was just a strong headache. That's why I am posting my report a bit late this evening. Anyway...

Carpe Noctem!

James

Oh dear James, I hope you are feeling better today. I hate having the Covid vaccinations because I get a bad headache for 3 weeks which I can't shift even with paracetamol. I dread having a 4th, let's hope they forget that idea :(

You did well to see all that you did, I tried WL only because I wanted a full disc for Perihelion day. On the screen I could only see the SE spot. I need to do all my processing to look for other areas, so your eyes beat my camera :)

I truely hope that you are COVID negative James and wish you the best.
Also I hope your daughter recovers very quickly.
I also am in a very difficult situation, as now two reasons for a hospital visit/stay, which as we are in the very-worst area as 8/8 high risk, is not somewhere I want to go at all..

Anyhow thanks for the report and for a relatively quiet Sun, (at least until this morning/5th) is interesting.

Regards
Terry

Mark,
I am better today. Work has overreacted a bit and kept me out until I am tested. I might be able to go back tomorrow if I test negative and I think I will. I still believe it was just a bad headache.

James, my friend, take care of yourself! When I read your post, I was very upset, I hope everything will work out.

Terry, Alexandra, I also want to support you. I am with you with all my heart, do not get sick!

We also have a difficult situation with this Covid. Some kind of dream, I could not imagine that I would see a pandemic :(

Thanks Ivan for your support to those of us in such difficult situations, as James, his Daughter, Alexandra and myself are in, with this massive on-going situation around us and with differing reasons/situations too.

KEEP VERY SAFE AND WELL - please..

Terry

I am a moron! I do this every year. Put the previous year date instead of the correct one. :-( Sorry. And what makes it bad is I overlooked it during proofreading!!

Great to hear, mine was too. I'm testing daily at the moment, but given the fact by tomorrow i'll be in a building with nearly 800 people I think it is only a matter of time before Omicron rips through it and other schools. We've been testing students as they return after the new year and are picking cases up and sending them back home.

Mark,
So many people have gotten it here, even vaccinated people are getting it much easier than predicted. Social distancing seems to be working better against the flu and cold than it does against COVID-19. The flu was almost non-existent in the US last year! I think eventually everyone will get it. Maybe only then will it become endemic.
