January 5 2022 Observations

Post by DeepSolar64 »

Session time is from 17:04 to 17:58 UTC. The skies are mostly clear with well below average seeing. The temperature is 53F ( 11.6C )

Coronado SolarMax II 90 DS. 32x and 50x ( Ha )
Today I can see 4 areas on the Ha disc. The SE has two easy spot-bearing active regions. AR12925 nearest the limb shows a couple of spots among the faculae and south of the spot I can see a filament. NW of AR12915 lies AR12924. Here I can see a single spot in the NNW part of it's facula. Well SW of AR12924 I can see a large filament without difficulty. Way NNE of AR12924 in the NE quadrant I can see a small low contrast plage. Another faint tiny one lies in the SW quadrant but is seen with certainty. Two filaments are seen in the far NNW not far off the limb. What few other filaments that are seen are scattered and small.

I notice only three prominences in double stack. There is an easy one on the SW limb that is leaning south. The NW limb shows a faint barely visible prom. I can't see any detail in it. It looks like a faint haze on the limb. I would have had to remove the stacking etalon to have gotten a good look at it. The third prom is a tiny one on the eastern limb.

The mottles are visible and I can just glimpse the spicule layer on the limb.

Celestron NexStar 102GT w/Altair wedge and Baader 540nm filter. 55x ( WL )
I got only three regions on the 540nm disc today. AR12925 is an easy object showing 2 spots surrounded by faculae with most of the faculae being SE of the spots. AR12924 shows a single spot with faint faculae SE of it. SDOHMIc imagery shows 5 tiny pores nearby but I could see none of them. The far SW shows a patch of faculae that is associated with AR12919. It's very near the limb.

The granulation is visible but is washed out and difficult.

Carpe Noctem!

James

Thanks James and the latest image for AR2924 & 2925 (as attached here and in my early post) shows considerable enlargement, making it more likely to flare during its' travels across the disk...

Hopefully you are feeling better ?

Regards
Terry

Thanks for your report, James. Grey skies again here (I’m 100 miles north of Mark) after a beautiful day yesterday. Actually, it has just started sleeting. At least my scopes are snuggly and warm.

Thanks everyone. I am well. I tested negative for COVID-19 and feel fine. I am cloudy today. Colder with snow to the west. I'll be really surprised if I see the Sun today.

James:
Thanks for the report, I just got a couple of shots due to Haze and jumping seeing.
Keep well, good that you tested negative.
Eric.
