January 7 2022 Observations. Nice SE activity.

Post by DeepSolar64 »

Session time is from 16:17 to 17:02 UTC. The skies are mostly clear with poor seeing. The temperature is a cold 26F ( -3.3C ) with a light breeze.

Coronado SolarMax II 60 DS. 16x, 25x and 33x ( Ha )
I can see seven plages/disturbances in the Ha chromosphere today! AR12924 in the SE quadrant shows two spots linked by two parallel rows of plage. It appears better visually than in the GONG images since it is overexposed there. GONG CT shows a tiny very thin bowed filament below the westernmost spot but I cannot see it in this poor seeing. I can however see larger filaments west and south of the system. SE of AR12924 lies AR12925. I see it as an elongated plage with a barely visible spot in it's NW section. A dumbbell shaped filament lies just north of it just below a visible but low contrast plage that was difficult. GONG CT shows two close together there but I never could distinguish more than one. They are probably magnetically connected and therefore one system anyway. NE of AR12925 lies today's most difficult disturbance to see. A mere ruffling of the chromosphere. NW of AR12924 across the Central Longitudinal Meridian in the SW quadrant lies a small but not difficult plage.

The NE quadrant shows two disturbances. Both fairly difficult. One fairly large one near the NE limb and another smaller one well NW of it. It was the last one found. An easy filament is seen NW of this last-found plage.

A few prominences are seen around the limb in double stack. A fairly bright small one on the SE limb and three nice ones on the NE limb. The northernmost of these is a close double " sprite "!! GONG CT shows a tiny prom on the SW limb but I didn't notice it. Seeing may have rendered it invisible.

The mottles were visible despite the seeing across the disc.

Orion 70mm Solar Telescope. 25x and 41.5x ( WL )
I can see four disturbances on the WL photosphere today. AR12924 is nice despite the poor seeing. I see it as two nice penumbra-bearing spots with a curled loop of smaller spots/pores between them. And the westernmost big spot is male with an umbral peninsula pointing NE! The large SE spot has a double umbra with a larger elongated southern component. AR12925 to the SE of AR12924 shows 2 spots. The umbra within a penumbra can be seen in the NW spot. It's faculae can be seen. Well NE of AR12925 I can see a tiny pore at 41x attended with some faint faculae. SDO HMI continuum shows another tiny pore well NW of AR12925 but I cannot see it. The NE shows a patch of faculae without spot or pore near the limb.

The granulation is not noticed at all today. Rendered invisible or nearly so by the seeing.

Happy Friday! Carpe Cerevisi!! 🍷 🍻

James

Great report and nice to see a winter setting as a change from the heat of an Australian summer!

You did make me giggle James, such a good description and so polite

Franco, you are so lucky to have snow, I'd rather have that than our rain and cold wet mud everywhere ;)

Thanks James.
Not being sure if your report is now turning into a mass-showing of the weather-conditions surrounding our homes, I've added my own pic of what the conditions are here today in S.E.England/8-1-2022.
Even the outside air-temperature is hovering around 8-degsC., the pic show the rest. Not sure if I would prefer the snow and get rid of all this wet and humidity of 100%.
At least the de-humidifiers in both observatories and the radio-room + indoors are keeping very-busy...

Alexandra,
Thank you! ;-)

Terry,
It's cold here ( 0C ) but clear. Tomorrow is forecast to warm a little and rain. It does look gloomy there. It's a good thing that you have those dehumidifiers.
