January 10 2022 Observations

Post by DeepSolar64 »

Session time is from 17:30 to 18:00 UTC. The skies are clear and the seeing is about average. The temperature is a cold 38F ( 3.3C )

Coronado SolarMax II 60 DS. 16x and 25x ( Ha )
I can see with some effort, seven disturbances in the Ha chromosphere today. AR12924 in the SW quadrant is the easiest to see with it's two large spots. The plage forms a line bridging the spots together. A filament can be seen with some difficulty in the NW corner of the system. Just to it's NE is another plage that is not difficult to see. AR12925 is seen east of AR12924 still in the SE quadrant. It shows a single spot with plage just east of it. AR12927 is located in the far SE near the limb. It shows a single spot with plage to it's SE. The NE quadrant shows a large plage near the limb. A filament is located NW of it. SW of this system but still in the NE quadrant with effort I pick out another plage. The NW quad shows a single plage. That of AR12926.

Prominences are easily seen around the limb in double stack today. I can see almost all of them that the GONG images show. The NE is particularly active with them. The NW has one reminiscent of the " Golden Arches "!!

The mottles are easily seen across the disc.

Orion 70mm Solar Telescope. 25x and 50x ( WL )
I can see five areas of activity on the WL photosphere today. AR12924 in the SW quadrant shows two nice spots with umbra/penumbra form. The NW spot shows two small spots at it's NE side. One of these is embedded within the larger spot's penumbra! AR12925 to the east of AR12924 shows a umbra/penumbra structured spot with two tiny spots/pores very close to it's SE side. AR12927 in the far SE shows a umbra/penumbra spot amid an easily seen large patch of faculae. The NE quad shows a large patch of faculae without spot or pore. AR12926 in the NW quadrant shows itself as two small spots.

The fine granulation is seen easily today.

The session music for today is Resurrexit by Taize.

Carpe Diem!

James

Half and hour well spent James. Just grey, damp and drizzle here for me today, but I was at work so I guess it doesn't really matter! Bring on better weather and a higher sun!

Terry,
Yep, I solved the mystery of the disappearing AR12926. :-D !

Good luck, Mark! Yes, I wish you clear skies and a higher sun!

Thanks again James and today SDO shows almost exactly the same disk layout with that AR2926...

Thanks for the report, James, you keep us all informed. The sun in the last days is very beautiful. We have had low heavy clouds for a long time, and I'm already starting to forget what it looks like :)

Good report for the days solar activity James!

I haven't been out the past few days...lots of snow yesterday and woke to -32.5C this morning  If it hadn't clouded up I might have tried to do some solar work, but I had to work and lost the window.

Wow, Brian. That's arctic cold! You are a tough one to observe in that, even with an observatory.

James I can't argue...it was cold! I didn't get out though due to work and clouds.

Just an example of how much the weather will change here...-32.5 Tuesday morning at sunrise and -1.5 this morning. Quite the swing in temps :?
