My Solar Roll-of-Roof observatory

Hi all,
Brian asked if I could post a pic of my solar RoR so I thought it best to make a new topic.

The solar RoR is made from modifying a commercial 10ft x 6ft apex shed. Because of space I decided to roll the roof off of the telescope area over the warm room and include a window from the warm room to see the telescopes working and slewing properly.

The mount is my old Skywatcher Neq6 modded with belt drive and wedge. It also has a beefier counterweight shaft and a recently modded power socket.

The shed itself has bigger support's on all corner's, top and middle. The roof can be moved with one hand on eight 4inch rubber wheels on angle iron. There is a flap that folds down on the south side. The viewing area is two meter's by two meter's and the warm room is two meter's by just over one meter.

The central pier is home made using plastic drain pipe filled with concrete and 18mm rod's and bolt's into the concrete and a 10mm metal plate holds the mount and bolted to the plate with the Neq6 extension pillar for hight to see the sun during the winter months.

The entire solar RoR is 4 meter's above ground level.

My cat's are always observing with me, lol.

Hi Terry,

That might be due to the fact the images are huge and even with my fast internet connection it took quite some time in order to see them.

;)

Hi James, I'm in the UK so weather is not brilliant during the winter months also combination of trees and cloud I've only a window of a couple of hours if there's a patch of blue sky in the right place at the right time.

Way cool Ella, thanks for sharing! I have a couple of questions if you don't mind :)

How do you find the replacement wedge for the mount? I've had my eye on one of these for a while - do you find it worth it / beneficial?

I understand it is 4m above the ground to get you above the trees / hedges etc, but how have you achieved this - stilts? Do you have any 'outside' views of it?

Very jealous I have to say! :)

Mark

Hi Mark, yes, the wedge is so much better although pricey. I did manage to get mine second hand however.

The shed is built on a bank with concrete foundations which brings it up to road level next to the hedge. This allows it to be used for seeing the sun in the winter months too. The shed has been there for a long time so I converted it into the RoR.

Thanks for the pics Ella, they show your setup very well! I like the Phoenix Complex placard on the door too ;)

The window looking out form the warm room is great addition...I have that as well to allow me to spy on the scope and sometimes to see the monitor.

Looking forward to the images for this in the future.

Take care,
Brian

Very nice, Nigella. I’d love something like this, but all my solar work is done from my driveway at the front of my house. Having an observatory there wouldn’t be popular with my neighbours or my better half  , so I’ll have to continue lugging my kit in and out of my garage every session.  At least it’s warm and dry in there, having been converted to a ‘man cave’ a few years ago.

What a great set-up Nigella! :bow

It makes a huge difference to be able to just switch on and start imaging.
Every imaging whim can be instantly satisfied instead of everything becoming a major hurdle.
You are already set up when conditions are not quite perfect.
So you have vastly more chances to practice your passion.
Instead of finding excuses not to carry everything out, align, tune, focus, adjust and connect everything together.
It is very difficult to over-emphasize the true value of an observatory. IMO.

BTW: Cats make poor counterweights and may even cause thermal problems if badly situated. ;)

Thanks Rusted, definitely making a huge difference. Amazing how much a difference it all makes and keeping warm in zero temperatures makes it more compelling to go out and observe/image. Just loving it even more now if that's possible.

Not just thermal problems, I get sudden eclipses when my cats decide it's a good idea to sit in front of the telescopes when imaging, suddenly everything goes black, lol. Got to love them though.

I've been looking at them on TelescopeServive in Germany, they're out of stock at the minute but I think I will pick one up when I get chance. At some point I want to get round to putting a belt drive on my EQ6 too.
