January 12 2022 Observations

Post by DeepSolar64 »

Session time is from 16:52 until 17:36 UTC. The skies have considerable high thin cloudiness and the seeing is average/fair. The temperature is 41F ( 5C ).

Coronado SolarMax II 60 DS. 16x and 25x ( Ha )
I can see 8 disturbances in the Ha solar chromosphere without too much effort. Naturally some are easier to see than others. AR12924 in the SW quadrant is easy to see. I see two spots with plage between them. I see a filament SE of the system and another due south very close to the limb. Just west of the westernmost spot lies a bowed filament. AR12925 shows itself as a spot and plage. I can see a filament NW of this system. NE of AR12924 I see a small low contrast plage. NE of AR12925 I can see a small plage, that of AR12928. The SE quadrant shows an easy plage, that of AR12927. Just south of it lies a nice filament. East of it lies 3 smaller filaments. The second one over shows a lightening under/around it. It may be some sign of activity that could cause the filament to lift off in the near future. It shows up on the GONG CT Ha image as well. The third filament is at the limb.

I can see an easy unnumbered plage in the NE quadrant. Two filaments lie to it's east and northeast. The NE filament is a curved arc. The north-central disc shows the hardest disturbance to see visually. I see it just as a faint pale patch but it's certainly visible. The NW quadrant easily shows the plage of AR12926.

I can see five prominences on the disc today. Three on the east-northeast limb. The northernmost one shows two appendages. The NW limb shows 2. The southernmost one is faint and barely detectable.

The mottles are visible across the disc without difficulty.

Orion 70mm Solar Telescope. 25x and 50x ( WL )
I got six spot groups on the WL photosphere today. AR12924 in the SW is two nice fully structured spots. The umbra to the westernmost spot is double and the umbra to the easternmost spot is S shaped. Six small spots/pores lie between them. A small spot lies closely south of the easternmost larger spot. I can see no detail within the penumbrae of these two spots. AR12925 shows itself only as a single structured spot. I see no pores or other spots nearby. AR12928 to the NE of AR12925 shows itself as two small spots and a pore. One of these spots is boat shaped and is probably made up of smaller pores. The C102 would have almost certainly clearly revealed these as the 4K SDO images do. Due east of AR12928 in the SE quadrant I see the almost perfectly structured spot of AR12927 with it's umbra and penumbra. A pore is barely visible close by to it's NE. Due north of AR12927 in the NE quadrant lies a small spot and pore. The NW quadrant shows a diamond shaped formation of spots that belong to AR12926.

I see no faculae at all on the disc today but the fine solar granulation is visible without difficulty. I wonder if high thin clouds may be reducing the visibility of the faint faculae shown on SDOHMIc imagery.

Carpe Diem!

James

Thanks James for the latest report and noting the new AR and the late-arrival/un-named spot in the N.E.

Due to further eye-sight difficulties here, plus the very-high COVID risk area around me and at my local hospital, plus public-transport and taxi risks of capture, I will not be able to get the attention done and required to rectify the situation.

Therefore it is now very likely that I will miss the opportunity of accurately reporting in the mornings - when my eyes are at their worst.

Keep up your excellent reports and remain very-safe too

Terry

Lovely report James, thanks for posting, similar to what I observed today but I counted seven prom's.

Keep strong Terry.

Terry,
Having eyesight problems really sucks for an astronomer. God bless you! I certainly wish you well. COVID-19 is really bad around here too. I know quite a few with it. My daughter is just getting over it and her mother who has been vaccinated has had it twice!! Thanks Terry.

Mark,
I bit over a half hour I think. I try to get an hour in every session but lately I just can't quite get it. I hate hurrying through a session. I see more if I can take my time.

Ella,
You beat me. I only got five. Were you in single-stack?

Goodnight everyone.

James

Thanks for the report, James. On the 12th it was sunny in the morning. I saw the Sun for the first time this year.
In general, it’s sad, many here have health problems, we all worry about Terry. I'm glad your daughter is doing well.

Ivan

Ivan,
I hope you can catch the Sun again soon. I am preparing for a winter storm at the moment and am under cloudy skies so no observing today. My daughter is improving now from COVID.

Stay well.

James
