Solar activity 13th jan 2022 - Mg (b2)

Post by Merlin66 »

Still hampered by strong winds but managed to get a reasonable MiniSHG image in the wavelength of Mg (b2)
All the current active areas and regions of faculae visible - AR 2924/5/6/7/8
plus these a bit of faculae up in the north east....

Ken,
This one certainly is sharper than your last Mg ( b2 ) images. I noticed the plage/faculae right away. The penumbrae of the sunspots can be seen a bit too!

James

P.S. Keep these less used " flavors " coming!!

Nice image, Ken, thank you. Can you please elaborate a bit on the views in the magnesium line ?

Thanks to everyone in recognising the image as a "SPOD" -amazing, and humbling.....
The Mg triplet and the Na D1/2 doublet are representative of the very low chromosphere, bordering on the top of the photosphere.
Based on the professional reviews, this would then infer the images should be similar to those found in Ca II K1 and the H alpha wings.
As Mark, I think, said " Like Continuum images on steroids!!"
There's a good table of the prominent lines in the Chromosphere (This one's an extract from Alexandra's blog)

Ken, all.
It appears that CaK, CaH and Mg all view the lower chromosphere near or at the photosphere-chromosphere transition region. Sodium D line may be the closest to the photosphere of all. It certainly looks closer to continuum than the rest. Does anyone else make and market a Magnesium ( b2 ) filter outside of DayStar?

I'm not aware of any other Mg (b2) filters. Daystar seems to be the only one.
